I don't think clpc was serious about his attempt, he just wanted to encourage everyone to come up with a suitable logo ... or else ;P

Stealthy, your wallpaper isn't very good as a wallpaper, but is an awesome base for MATE logo. Just replace "X"-type net with "M"-type net, something like the top of this:

Hahha ok. I did not make the wallpaper, and I do like it as a wallpaper, but making it the Mate logo sounds nice too.

Working on it, why don't you go over here and open a issue https://github.com/Perberos/Mate-Extra. It will probably get fixed quicker that way.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

This is not a kettle or mate, but what I think it should be. We are rescuing Gnome 2, so we should have something to symbolize that, I think a bird fits this pretty well.

Here are some examples, although they need to be made "cartoonish".

Here's my attempt for you:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5699/logo2small.png
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1372/logosmallo.png

One with the straw and one without. They were done quickly so if you like it I'll give it some more work.

Interested to see how this project goes.

during the install i recieved several conflicts, the largest of which was this

going into root and doing rm to all the conflicting locations and files fixed the issue as the conflicts were reinstalled by mate-polkit. so it didnt break the system

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Ok after dealing with the conflict issues the  system is perfectly installed. and logs in just fine.

Valiant effort you've made here for one person. my hat goes off to you, this is a great thing uve done and alot of work.

Edit: forgot everything i just said. i figured out how to completely change themes

Question: is my ram usage normal , i have 4GB DDR3 Gaming ram and it says im using 504MB when all im running is skype and wicd

Sorry a phew more questions

- Is it possable to get the CPU/RAM Applet that goes in the middle of the gnome-panel. ive seen it in a phew videos.
- Is it possable to get the new Volume manager that gnome 3 uses. thats compatable with pulse or the gnome pulse audio applet to autostart with MATE. ive installed it. but theres no options in pavu for it

I'm currently using the Atolm theme, (which I think should be included in the default install). Also about the volume manager, I've been using xfce4-volumed

What is 'it' that says you are using 504MB

Try 'free -m' and see what 'it' says.

My system:

ewaller@odin:~ 1032 %free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3869 3064 804 0 248 1034
-/+ buffers/cache: 1781 2087
Swap: 3906 33 3872
ewaller@odin:~ 1033 %

I am not really using 3064MB with 804MB free.
The system has made good use of idle RAM (Unused RAM is wasted RAM) and has cached things for me.
If memory is needed, the cache is dropped, So I really am using 1781MB with 2087MB free.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Ever since installing Mate, anything I download in Chromium wants to open in Firefox regardless of file associations...has anyone else observed this problem?

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

nankura wrote:

Same problem three days ago after yaourt -Syu. Resolved after reinstalling, sysvinit, util-linux, core/libltdl and multilib/lib32-libltdl.

Try :

pacman -S sysvinit util-linux core/libltdl

On x86_64, with multilib :

pacman -S sysvinit util-linux core/libltdl multilib/lib32-libltdl

I think you need to do something with "xdg-settings".

@nankura

in ~/.xinitrc put "exec ck-launch-session mate-session"

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I have updatet with -Syu and now I do not have a german keyboard layout anymore. Even if I try to change it with the software under System -> Preferences -> Keyboard it is still the US keyboard layout. What did I do wrong and how can I change it again?

edit I also can not change my background or wallpaper and it is now completely green. That is weird.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Just did all my updates for the mate desktop and mate-panel won't work. Says:

mate-panel: error while loading shared libraries: libltdl.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I've checked that libltdl.so.7 is definitely there. Does anyone know if I need to make a link to somewhere other than /usr/lib/ ?
