Only use proprietary driver for gaming?
I have an ATI graphics card and the proprietary driver causes a bunch of problems that I don't like... however, some games (specifically Minecraft) get really bad performance without it.
It's probably wishful thinking, but is there a way to only enable the proprietary driver for certain apps?

Not without rebooting/restarting X everytime you want to switch.
