Yeah, but a powerbook doesn't come with a mouse you can replace, and as far as I know you can't replace the touchpads buttons (easily, hehe), which is often the problem. On a desktop, adding a mouse with more buttons isn't a problem though, on a laptop, not everyone likes carrying around a mouse with it.

No the problem is that if you don't know the OS then you THINK you need more than two buttons but you don't. Hotkeys, click and hold, and various other actions easy and quickly replace the pointless need for extra buttons. I had never understood this argument until I realized that some people just don't know the OS that well. I rarely used the second buttons on PCs until I knew Windows better. There are other examples I could use that are comparable but they would be pointless. If you know the OS you won't feel impeded by differences in hardware or software design.

Even on a PC, you'd be surprised how infrequently you use the extra buttons.
When I forget to take my external mouse with me to school, in design class I just steal a mouse of one of the emacs, and somehow I survive quite easily with only one button.

Surely it's time to shift the mouse-button debate to its own thread?
