Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

Thanks alot c00kie for your help!

I've tried your latest example from your gist and my issues are now all gone! Thank you!

I think though that I will continue with dzen2, since it's really "snappy" i.e. when moving between desktops or changing tiling mode, then dzen is instatanious whereas some_sorta_bar takes maybe 2 secs before changin it's output. Also, when going to and back from a VT, then the bar would be empty for about 30 secs, so I changed the timeout to 1 instead of 30...

Thanks again!

CU, Martin.

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I'm trying out monsterwm, yet I can't seem to get your "some-sorta-bar" to work. Not 100% sure, if I can output any errors some where?

I have just pushed it to my dotfiles repo. If some one could have a look at point out any newb errors.

Thanks

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I cloned it and I can run it just fine.
some_sorta_bar doesn't come with mosterwm. mosterwm doesn't have any builtin panel.
You must clone moetunes repo from here and compile/install it separately.

If you've already done that, but it doesn't show up, then I'm not sure what it could be.
I see monsterwm-start is executable, so it's not permisions' problem.

If you have a sleep time in your script for some_sorta_bar then it'll never be snappy. If you want to change what the bar shows as monsterwm does stuff, you have to use changes to your fifo as the trigger not time.
c00kiemon5ter had mentioned about the bar needing to redraw on expose events so that's fixed and pushed.

@c00kie

I just noticed a bug: Pressing mod1+k when only one window open kills the wm/x.

Thanks in advance!

Just pushed a fix that would cause monsterwm to freeze or crash when only one client was present and one tried to go to the previous (non-existing) window.

also redrawing from expose events for some_sorta_bar is fixed wink

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I cannot get focusurgent(mod1+backspace) to work on my end. It's supposed to focus the desktop with the urgency-hint right? for me it dosen't do anything...

Edit: Again, I apoligise for my ignorance here smile

Of course it works, and I had just misunderstood the option, i.e. it focuses the urgent _tile_ and not desktop!

Sorry again!

Edit2: Thanks c00kie, I edited my post while you wrote yours smile

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

not the desktop, just the window, in the current desktop.

no prob, maybe I should change it to focus the urgent desktop too
what do you say ?

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I just updated some_sorta_bar and I'm getting an error: "Failed to get status output", and all of the text in the console goes red (I kinda like that though tongue ). Everything seems to be working fine other than the error, as far as I can tell? Is anybody else getting this. My startup script was working fine before the update.

That happens 'cause the bar is started before anything is written to it and I forgot the \033[0:m in the printf..
I pushed a fix so it won't print anything on starting now.

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I'm still getting the same thing only:

Failed to get status output.
 m

And I'm getting this warning when compiling:

some_sorta_bar.c: In function ‘update_output’:
some_sorta_bar.c:46:19: warning: ‘first_run’ may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wuninitialized]

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

Wow, its really awesome big_smile, me gusta! I'm not so experienced with tiling WM:s but I've tried a few now, and monsterwm is the one I like the most wink. I only have one question: Do I need to recompile it each time I wanna configure it, and do I need to uninstall it first or will it overwrite? (Sorry for such a n00by question)

BTW I wanna thank you cookiemaster for this really awesome WM big_smile

Sorry for my bad english i'm still in school learning to write and speech properly tongue

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

@GNUkid, yes it needs to be re-compiled.
The easiest thing is

# make clean install

which will build a fresh executable and update

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

From what I found, I guess the answer is "no" but... is it possible to make dzen2 clickable? like conky is piped to dzen and I want to click the clock and show gsimplecal.

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

I don't know if the stable version supports it yet, but the cvs one has interaction; that is clickable elements.
dzen2 can do many stuff, you can build full volume controlers, or media player controlers or calendars or mail/msg notifiers w/e.

in cvs version it's ^ca() iirc, see the dzen2 readme

Re: monsterwm! ~ yet another tiny wm

yeah, I think it works good too. there are some double borders, but the functionality is there.
when I have more time I'll look into getting the borders right.

I think it wont get into master for now, but ofcourse I'll keep it up to date.
Maybe in the future and if people really want it.

grid already gives you 2x3 windows which is great, although it misses things like resizing the master and stack area.
nmaster is really flexible, you can do flipped tile and bstack, and many things with the resizable stack area.

also, ofcourse nmaster settings are saved per desktop smile
