In my experience attempting to run a flat panel at anything except native resolution is going to be far harder on your eyes than fonts that are too small

My mother's desktop computer (not under Linux) has a lcd screen which is configured at a lower resolution than native, to get bigger characters.
I didn't remark any problems with that. It's also an NVidia graphical card.

It may depend on the resolution: some lower resolutions look not-that-bad, but others look horrible. I couldn't find a way to make them better and had to settle for even lower res because otherwise e.g. the tooltips were nearly unreadable.

It's like, er, having the choice between reading a professionally-printed book, or a book printed by a $10 inkjet, smudged and unfocused.
It's ludicrous to suggest/recommend such a ridiculous and unnecessary compromise. Hope I've made my point
