Re: Nvidia 173xx, Kernel 3.2, and X server 1.10.6. Fresh install guide.

Glad this helped a little tiny bit...

wish I had checked this thread a little sooner because it might have saved me some grief.

After doing a fresh install (don't ask) I decided to give linux-lts and nivida-lts a try to see if I could avoid all the hassle (not knowing about nvidia's update to 173xx) and it messed up my system.  Gets to udev and gives me a blank screen.  The system is live, just no video.

Going to try another fresh install and give building the nvidia driver a try.

I've seen that http://arm.konnichi.com/search/index.ph … ommunity=1 contains also the binary nvidia-173xx package.
Can I use it instead of compiling from source?
Thank you!

Lol, you're not compiling from source. Nvidia provides closed, proprietary drivers. Read the PKGBUILD: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=56776

And no, you can't, because v173.14.31 doesn't work with the latest Xorg.

But v173.14.35 (from the AUR) does.

Re: Nvidia 173xx, Kernel 3.2, and X server 1.10.6. Fresh install guide.

Hi !

Thank you for this post and all this information !

I want to install archlinux with cinnamon as desktop environment on the computer of a friend, but I have some issue with it and (I think) the Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE.

I installed nvidia-173xx from the aur, and the last xorg. It begins at the display manager, I installed gdm but it's extremly slow, as a result that I can't log in (nevertheless the mouse is fluid..) hmm the cpu is not so much used yet, and it's the same thing in the cinnamon session or the gnome session (I tried with lightdm which works fine). Moreover, in the session I've got some strange graphical things, such as some missing white pixels, or a blue window when I launch nautilus, ... (here are some screenshots : http://i49.tinypic.com/2efhm6s.png and a with a window : http://i46.tinypic.com/116m05k.png)

I tried to install the nouveau driver, and now gdm don't freeze, I can log in, but there is always these strange graphical issues.

Is the graphic card too old for gnome ? Or did I forget something ?

Thank you in advance for your help !! And sorry for my english ..

I start a new topic, maybe it's better : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1157593
