run 64bits OS as guest in Virtualbox on archlinux 32 bits reboots host

hi.

I have open this bug report but I don't hold my breath to see it fixed any time soon. https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/9884

The problem is that when I try to run a 64 bits OS (as guest) inside Virtualbox on my archlinux 32 bits (as host), it reboots my pc (host) !
I tried various configuration for the VM but it happens nonetheless.

I think virtualbox trigger a bug in the kernel or something like that ?
it's possible to run 64bits OS in a 32bits host expescially that my AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ AuthenticAMD is able to run a 64bits OS natively, right ?

Anyone got that problem too ? Is there any work-around to make it work ?

You need a 64bit host to run a 64bit guest most likely.

No, that's wrong. If your processor supports 64bit and VT-x/AMD-V it works.

This option is not disabled in vbox GUI. I can create any 64bits VM without restriction.

Looking at the doc, I found in Known issues:
"64-bit guests on some 32-bit host systems with VT-x can cause instabilities to your
system. If you experience this, do not attempt to execute 64-bit guests. Refer to the
VirtualBox user forum for additional information."

but I have an AMD proc that use AMD-V and not VT-x ?!

I guess I have to understand that is not supported even though it let me think it is.

Slightly off-topic, but why is your host 32bit anyway, if you have a 64bit CPU?

Sorry, what I ment was not that it is not impossible, just that it usually doesn't work well.

my first install of archlinux was 64bit. But, at that time, way back in 2007 or something like that, I had problem with flash or wine or whatever.
I switched back to 32bit and stayed there since.

I was thinking to make the switch but never done it. A recent post on the ML made me thought there is no real benefit for that. So I did not bother to reinstall or transform it into a 64bit archlinux

Then what you need is the multilib repository to add to your /etc/pacman.conf under your 64-bit install and everything should work fine. In 64-bit, wine is under multilib repo.
