Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

Alas, I didn't get into the beta, but I've got the client working at least. Hopefully they release a proper 64-bit client eventually.

I've already got five games in my "Linux games" list, which is pretty snazzy. If I renewed my humbundle steam keys I'd probably have even more. Sadly, l4d2 isn't in the list, despite me owning it for Windows. Maybe it'll appear once the beta's done.

Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

how do you pass the steam guard thing?
I installed the client and it works, but I can't seem to pass the steam guard thing where they ask me to provide a key... I have a steam account and it works fine in wine.

edit: nevermind, found out.
edit2: for those who want to take a look around, if you click on a link like steam://open/friends you'll get past the "you're not in the Beta group" dialog and be able to explore the store, chat with your friends, etc. It seems it's one of the first bugs found by the linux community big_smile

According to Valve over 60.000 people filled out the survey in the first days.

Sorry to hear that. It would be nice to have someone inside. On the other hand 60k is hell of a lot for beta testing! And they wanted around 1000 people. Steam on Linux might get more traction at the begging than I thought it would.

Oooh, cheers for that.

I like this new steam "Big Picture" UI, presumably that's a sneak-peek at the Steam console UI. It's a little slow on nouveau though, and seems to think my graphics card only has 200MB of RAM, but eh, my first impressions are that it's gonna be great.

I'm amazed how fast fellow Arch users figured out all the dependencies. It installs flawlessly from AUR even as 32 bit. Just had to compile 2 extra libs.
Don't think it'd be hard for Valve to release a 64 bit client. In that case it would just have to be repackage the whole thing and it works.

That was my understanding too, although I figured it was because Ubuntu essentially uses the same sort of installation process for various apps that Steam does (last time I used Ubuntu, it already seemed like folks were shying away from Synaptic in favor of the Software Center, let alone using dpkg from cli).  At first I was nervous that Valve was gonna go the same route many of these big companies do, and just throw a .deb package at us and leave us to figure it out.  Glad to see that's not the case.

Steam running on my shitty laptop with CK Kernel.

Ok I even managed to install World of Goo Demo through Steam. It was just like on Windows. Downloaded it made an Icon on my Desktop. Overlay in Game work. Screenshots and uploading them to your profile also works.

Too bad the window focus is broken with xmonad. Does someone have a clue what goes wrong there, and if it's fixable on the user end? (well, apart from another wm, obviously)

It's a simple matter of running "readelf -d" on all binaries and libraries. You can do the same thing with Windows DLLs if you install MinGW binutils. In fact that dependency list for steam is overkill. Second and third level deps are in there.

They need to do something about the per-game dependencies. Now the games just crash if they can't find a dependency.

And also, why can't I start Superbrother?

Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

I had the same problem snufkin, if you run x86-64 Arch then you need to install lib32-curl from aur and it will run just fine.

Overall I'm loving it, I've only tried World of Goo and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP but they worked perfectly besides the above issue. I can't seem to get VVVVVV to download correctly though.

1) Does Steam deal with dependencies on Ubuntu?  Note dpkg all over the place in their launcher script; I imagine the client itself is the same; I imagine dealing with dep handling on other distros is a much lower priority.

2) lib32-curl from the AUR is required for swordandsorcery, as noted in its own AUR pkgbuild from the HIB.

Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

So I downloaded two free demos (never had a Steam account and I'm not going to pay if I'm not sure it works) but when I try to run either of them, I get the same error message:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/jente/.steam/bin/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
/bin/sh: /home/jente/Steam/SteamApps/common/Space Pirates and Zombies Demo/SpazDemo.exe: can't execute binary file

Anyone?

I assume that's because it's a "Portable Executable" file (.exe) and not an "Executable and Linkable Format" file (ELF). You'll probably need to run those with wine.

Meh, they're downloaded through the native Steam client.

Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

The "World of Goo demo" is something that is known to work.  It does in fact work very well on my laptop of many years.  I have also purchased a game called Frozen Synapse earlier, and it works via native steam as well.

What doesn't work, or atleast not consistently, is steam chat with other people.  Typing into chat and hitting enter to send creates a new paragraphs, words disappear occasionally when pressing the space bar and so fourth.  It doesn't happen all the time but it's acting a little weird.  The Big Picture Feature runs sluggishly on my laptop with mobile nvidia graphics (135m + 128mb ram) which is a disappointment, but I'm sure valve needs to optimize it.  It runs well on another system with a high end graphics, but it better with an HD 6870 ati card.  alt+tabbing out of full screen games and interfaces has worked well for me with nvidia graphics even as low end as they are, but never well with my ati graphics even the high end one.

If the game gives you a missing executeable error, find the executable and run it with wine if you have it.  I tried this out with the original Red Orchestra game which was the other game in my library that supposedly was available for Linux.  The developers of the games haven't uploaded the linux friendly files I theorize, so even though they may have native linux versions of the game, steam downloaded the windows ones.  Though i theorize that valve will create some sort of a feature to run steam in conjuction with wine, eg launch games through the native platform that need to use wine.  I wouldn't mind this for games that are windows only due to the developers choice, but all games that have native options should run via steam natively, without the help of wine.  I'm really hoping these ports will be quality ports, because it would really kill me though I know it will happen - certain ports will perform worse native than through wine.  This is why the valve linux platform should give us the option to download the windows version of the game that we plan to launch with wine, rather than have us run a windows version of steam through wine.

In the end, from what I noticed running the native version of the steam provids of with better ram usage (less) and lower cpu usage, though I noticed that X started using close to 30% of my cpu which I've never seen happen before.  I'm not sure if this is unrelated.

I'd love to hear from someone who is ACTUALLY in on the beta - which reminds me.  For those who haven't figured it out, don't worry - a valve employee commented that they not going to get anyone in trouble for this - just don't expect the full fledged beta experience with tf2 and l4d2... you can still run the beta by launching steam with the following:

$ steam steam://open/games

You will have to run steam once at least and have it boot you off for not being a part of the beta.  On your next attempt running the above will work.

The death of Windows is eminent...  with the whole microsoft corporation subsequently....  though we shouldn't under estimate microsoft's consoles and other products - most of us have heard rumors of valve too releasing a hacker friendly console which will likely run it's base off of linux.  I'm guessing the "big picture" feature via steam which is also in beta is something along the lines of how they plan the interface for this console.  Cool stuff.  I'll bet it won't have cd/dvd drives.

Love to hear what other people think of this, I'm quite enthusiastic about it.

Mmm, I guess that's just an oversight by either Steam or the SPAZ devs. The full game works fine here, with Steam pulling down the native Linux files:

wormzy@sakura[pts/1]~/Steam/SteamApps/common/Space Pirates and Zombies$ ls

Re: Looking forward to having Steam on Linux? Read this.

My steam chat works flawlessly. XBox Controllers are known to work very well with Linux. So Big Picture Mode with a plugged in controller pretty much turns your PC into a gaming console.

There are also rumours that Microsoft will Launch Office for Android and iOS in 2013. I hope it also ends up on Linux. This would make my last wine installation obsolete. No need to run Steam through wine anymore. No need to run MS Office 2007 through wine. That'd be awesome. But I don't think Microsoft is that stupid. No one would need Windows RT for ARM Tablets with full Office Suite in that case.

The so called exploit which allowed people who weren't allowed in the beta to sign into the steam beta and use it was reported on the valve forums as a bug / exploit respectfully, and then an employee whose name is Rick Johnson casually commented that no one has been banned or punished for signing into the steam linux closed beta as a non beta participant.  The original post was moved to the closed beta bugs section.  I wouldn't worry about it but there's nothing exciting for non beta partcipants unless you already own a linux game in your steam library, and/or are trying and willing to try out what I mentioned my above post regarding the free demo.

@akspecs - thanks for the reply. I own most of the Humble bundles and a load of other stuff, including most Valve titles. I've actually been holding off playing Portal 2 as I'm hoping to play it under Linux (eventually, could be a while I realise). I've had a Steam partition for a while, shared between wine and an XP (now down to 8G) partition and the sooner I can ditch both the better.
