Re: First boot of PC with UEFI

Sorry 2nd link should be http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/2012.0 … 1-testing/ . Any once booted you may have to manually setup grub2-efi yourself.

I don't fully understand the instructions on the 1st link  but I'll download this iso and give it a go.

ok sorry double post here... downloaded the iso and misread what you wrote at the end there.. and just burned the iso straight to dvd and doesn't boot..(because it doesn't have uefi support).  how do I manually setup grub2-efi on the iso? or were they the instructions on the 1st link that I didn't fully understand?

Re: First boot of PC with UEFI

I've been having the same problems as you guys trying to get grub to boot using UEFI on a Samsung Series 7 Slate (Black screen after choosing something in the grub menu). I finally managed to get archiso going using the instructions above, so thanks rat!

Re: First boot of PC with UEFI

There does seem to be quite a few bugs around regarding UEFI on Linux, hopefully they all get fixed soon as UEFI is quickly becoming the standard on all motherboards.

Anyway...

Can I clarify those instructions before I do them...

-Download the .iso  (archlinux-2012.04.08_15-47-01-testing-core-x86_64.iso)
-Format a usb stick fat32 and give it the label 'archiso_label'
-Extract the contents of the iso onto the usb stick
-copy some files around as stated
-renamed some things in the script as stated
-I don't know what an aif profile is.. on the last instruction

One of the systems which would not boot from the external optical drive was Arch sad  (archboot CD). It gets on it's way well enough but then the message:
"Switching to radeon kms mode" appears. The screen goes black and that's it. My current setup uses the built-in graphics on the motherboard, so perhaps the addition
of a graphics card would help Arch to boot (???).

Can you try the kernel parameter

radeon.modeset=0

or try "nomodeset"?

@ridikulus.rat:

radeon.modeset=0

appended to the linux line in the boot parameters does the job! At least I get into the Arch Installation Program so that I can install and experiment further with the real problem.
Thanks!
( nomodeset doesn't help by the way...)

Re: First boot of PC with UEFI

Right I followed these instructions you gave:

the.ridikulus.rat wrote:

For creating a UEFI bootable Archiso based USB

1. Download one of the Archiso files with x86_64 Linux >=3.3 kernel from http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/ (any iso after 10-APR-2012).
2. Format any USB as FAT32 and label (FS) it with <ARCHISO_LABEL> corresponding to the iso
3. Extract the Archiso ISO contents to the USB FAT32 partition.

4. Replace (USB) with the actual mountpoint of the USB FAT32 partition.

# mkdir -p (USB)/EFI/{archiso,boot}
# cp (USB)/arch/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz (USB)/EFI/archiso/vmlinuz.efi
# cp (USB)/arch/boot/x86_64/archiso.img (USB)/EFI/archiso/archiso.img
# wget -O (USB)/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi https://edk2.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/edk2/trunk/edk2/EdkShellBinPkg/FullShell/X64/Shell_Full.efi
# wget -O (USB)/EFI/boot/startup.nsh http://projects.archlinux.org/archiso.git/plain/configs/releng/efiboot/EFI/boot/startup.nsh

5. Replace %INSTALL_DIR% with "arch" (without quotes) in (USB)/EFI/boot/startup.nsh .
6. Replace %ARCHISO_LABEL% with <ARCHISO_LABEL> corresponding to the iso, in (USB)/EFI/boot/startup.nsh .
7. (Optional) Copy the aif profile from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1084283 .
8. Reboot

but I must be doing something wrong as the USB doesn't even boot to a grub menu.  Just get a flashing cursor on one corner.

Re: First boot of PC with UEFI

@tuxqi: There is no grub or menu in efistub booting. You should directly get shell prompt or AIF menu.
