After today's update I can't login any more since the keyboard doesn't work. I don't use any display manager just a console login, so it's nothing related to X. unplugging the keyboard and plugging it in again doesn't solve the problem. The keyboard works in GRUB but not in the login console. Booting to runlevel 1 doesn't help. I see a FAIL message among the boot lines but can't say what exactly failed since the line disappears to fast. It might be udev or something being started shortly before or after it.

I suppose some bug in the new version of usbutils but don't know how to find it. Also, since the keyboard doesn't work the only thing I can do is accessing the files from a parallel install (which hasn't been updated yet) or at best chrooting...
The problem might be related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=142172 but the symptoms still sound a bit different so I opened a new topic.
Thanks for any hint,
PhotonX

The very worst thing you can do with free software is to download it, see that it doesn't work for some reason, leave it, and tell your friends that it doesn't work. - Tuomas Lukka

There should be info in the kernel log about what failed.
You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Here is the kernel log. The last two lines come from replugging the keyboard. I can't find anything suspicious. At 2.210040 the keyboard 8-3 is initialized and afterwards there is only one warning at 2.787010 which seems to be not related to usb stuff.

I tried to switch ports from keyboard and mouse instead of just unplugging and plugging back in the keyboard. Surprisingly, I got following line right in the login prompt:

I found following thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=134726 Will try out the solution and report.

Tried to create the usb_hci_order.conf file as suggested in the last post of the linked thread, but this showed no effect. But I have made two new observations now: Firstly, I could read the fail message on boot (due to my cheap digicam ), it's "Loading user-specified modules" which is failing.
The second thing: One time, the keyboard didn't stop working immediately and I managed to type in the login data. Then the desktop has been loaded but compositing was disabled, a message stating that "cpufreq" couldn't be found appeared and the mouse&keyboard didn't work. So it seems as if all the modules for graphics, usb, cpu frequency scaling and so on failed to initialize. That being said, here's the modules line from my /etc/rc.conf:
MODULES=(fuse powernow-k8 cpufreq_ondemand)
So there are no fglrx or usb modules here, they are loaded automatically without me having configured them to - just concernig the "user-specified" part of the error message. In the end I'm still stuck and have no idea how to make the modules work...

I've now found out, that the cause of the problem was the kernel upgrade. By downgrading linux and linux-headers back to 3.3.6 I've got rid of the problem.

Perhaps upgrading again will now provide a good result since there could have been an error in your first download.

Nope, unfortunately, each try to update kernel and headers to 3.3.7 reproducibly leads to the problem described above... I opened a bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30044 Let's see where the problem really was.

I'm still forced to use kernel 3.3.6 since any newer kernel (including the latest 3.4.4-2) drops me in a system with no keyboard, mouse, ethernet and CPU clocking. Any hints on how to diagnose the problem are greatly appreciated.

Have you found a solution, PhotonX?
I am in the same position. Booting to gdm, reveals that my keyboard and mouse (both USB, are not working). Booting to run level 3 (... And run level 1 is just the same) shows the login prompt but the keyboard is useless in this situation because it does not work. Evidently the keyboard does work during grub as I am able to change the boot options, and I run many OS's this machine, all have the keyboard working fine.
I use an apple aluminum USB keyboard and a generic USB mouse. I also have a gigabyte z68 motherboard. What about you?

Yeah, somebody else with the same problem! I'm using a Logitech M500 USB mouse and a Cherry Cymotion Master Linux USB keyboard with an MSI A75A-G35 motherboard. So it seems to be absolutely not hardware related. Also I have an old Arch 32Bit install on the same machine which is working fine.
In my case the problem appeared the first time when I tried to upgrade the kernel from 3.3.6 to 3.3.7. It seems that each kernel newer then 3.3.6 causes the problem. But now, aus you can read in my last post, I made another update, aus usually not touching the kernel, but the problem appeared anyway. I'll try to find out which of the updated packages caused the problem this time. What caused the problem in your case?
Do you have an external /boot partition? Is the system installed on an SSD?
Also, I've reported a bug concerning this issue but it didn't get much attention: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30044 You might drop a comment there and/or vote for it.

I've found out now, that the package causing the problem was kmod this time. So, using
glibc 2.16.0-1
kmod 9-1
linux 3.3.6-1
linux-headers 3.3.6-1
in my case is a workaround.

I'm glad we have the same problem, though I am not glad that it exists! I too have a i686 arch machine running without any problems, though there were problems regarding wifi and Ethernet before I properly installed glibc to it. I am installed on an SSD and no I don't have an external /boot partition. But I don't think it's relevant.

Looks to be my problem. I'll let you know how things are when I downgrade those packages. The reason I ruled out the kernel is because I use the 3.3.8 kernel with the -ck patch set which I compiled myself. Thanks for the pinpointed packages because my system broke in this manner after a big update. I'll need to chroot into my system to fix anything but I will post back with results. Thanks again.

Well, I have two installs with three differences:
external /boot - no external /boot
SSD - HDD
64Bit - 32Bit
On the left one the problem appears, while on the right one it doesn't. So it looks like it's either an architecture or an SDD/HDD or some other kind of problem.
Would it be very time consuming to try a standard kernel? It would be interesting whether in your case the standard kernel also stops working after 3.3.6.
edit: In my case glibc can't be updated because my old kernel 3.3.6 has some files in /lib (see the announcement on the main page). If your kernel doesn't have this problem, you should be able to update glibc without any problem. It's just kmod that is causing the problems.

On one of my old systems (the 32 bit one) I had to uninstall the kernel, it's headers, my graphics driver, and my wireless driver to update glibc. Then I would reinstall. Only do it if you have it in your pacman pkg cache - oh and don't reboot until you reinstall everything haha.
I don't have a live environment but I'll be more than willing to let you know how the standard default arch Linux kernel performs, as soon as I find my live USB or make a new one.

I looked at the changelog of kmod (https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … 45b091eaf1) and the new version seems to search for modules in /usr/lib/modules. Maybe newer kernels do the same. However I looked up and I don't have this folder on my system. But the strange thing is: I also don't have this folder on the 32Bit system where the problem doesn't appear! However, I did update the kernel only, not kmod there... Will try to update kmod and report back.
Another possible cause of the problem: In my case Grub is installed in the MBR of a different drive (not the same drive as the one where the problematic system is installed). Does this apply in your case?

New observations: I could update kmod, glibc and lib32-glibc without modules being not found. kmod by moving /lib/modules to /usr/lib/modules and glibc by following the wiki howto: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … iki:usrlib (thanks to fatboy for pointing me out at this).
BUT: Still any attempt to update the kernel result in all modules being not found. Now after the move from /lib to /usr/lib I have to recreate a symlink on each kernel 3.3.6 installation since the headers of kernel 3.3.6 don't respect the new placement.

hi guys,
I was searching for exactly this behavior on the web, found your posts.
I'm working on a debian wheezy and used the 3.5-rcX kernel due to intel graphics support of ivyBridge...
(i915: mtrr-error: graphic performance suffers!)
I've tested 3.5-rc1 up to rc7:
only rc5 does not show the keyboard error & works more ore less with the intel GraKa.
rc6 -> keyboard pbl.
then, I did switch back to 3.4-trunk series in debian experimental and the bug entered here in 3.4.4.....
and I'm also using a apple alu, keyb., but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
booting a different kernel always fixed it for me.
IMHO it's definitely kernel related and has been on and off during rc1 up to rc7.
what you wrote, that it meanwhile hit 3.3.x points to a "whatever driver", which was included in the kernel-source-tree at a certain time and spread out to all branches 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 (like a flue)
and be aware: on my machine, 3.5-rc7 introduced a new suspend/resume problem. so the latest is not always the best...
hope this helps you nail down & clarify some things.
greetings from kocheler see

I just saw, that 3.5 is out till yesterday, and will come back with my results...

Chymian, thanks for your report. I'd like to clarify: Do you have only the keyboard problem or is it that all modules fail to load? Since in my case the problem was not keyboard related, mouse, network, graphics, CPU clocking, just everything that needs some kernel module to work also fails.
I'm thinking about how to diagnose the problem. Since the keyboard doesn't work you can't run any commands by hand. But you can put some scripts into autostart that would save their output in some log files. But what commands to run to diagnose the problem? First of all lsmod would be quite interesting, but what else?
Unfortunately in Arch Linux you have only one kernel at a time, so I have to chroot into the system to downgrade the kernel after each attempt to upgrade it. So I'd like to get the most out of the test run.

I believe you can have more than one kernel installed, you just have to point grub (or syslinux) at whichever kernel you wish to boot from.
Try installing the linux-lts kernel for now and if it works you can use it while testing current kernels.

MisterAnderson, thanks a million! Your hint made me find the problem finally. It's the dumbest story ever, whoever is interested in how unexplainable behaviour can emerge from a few dumb mistakes, here you go:
The root of the problem was here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141745 When installing Arch I didn't have an external /boot partition. Kernel 3.3.6 had been installed directly on the root partition in the /boot folder. Then, following the hint in the thread above, I created a /boot partition and mounted it as such. However, the Grub installation that was starting all the kernels, didn't belong to the actual system, it belonged to the 32bit system that had no problem. So what did actually happen?
Every time I tried to upgrade the kernel the /boot partition was mounted and the kernel image was written into the /boot partition. The modules were written into /lib or /usr/lib, a folder on the root partition. Then, when booting the system, the Grub partition was not mounted, since Grub didn't know anything about it's existence. So, how did the system managed to boot at all? Well, in the /boot folder of the root partition still was the kernel image of the very old kernel 3.3.6 install, so Grub found it and booted it up. But the modules on the root partition belonged to the updated kernel and couldn't be loaded with the old 3.3.6 kernel.
Now that you pointed me to the lts kernel, I installed it Grub didn't find the lts kernel image - of course, since it was in the external /boot partition. But when the system was booted up, I could see the kernel in the /boot folder! So I came to the idea that something is screwed up with the external /boot and yeah, after removing /boot from /etc/fstab and reinstalling the kernels into the /boot folder of the root partition everything works fine.
