In /etc/hosts, add (or modify) the line:

127.0.0.1     archserver.localdomain    archserver

It should fix the log out mesage. You could try kde again. KDE is quite dependant on network config.

that is correct. I assumed that archserver is your hostname as set in rc.conf

ok so i uninstalled fxce4 and install kde 3.4.2 --- still same error .. i looked into it tho and alot of other kde apps are failing to open to ...

kwin - kpersonalizer --ksplash -- kdeinit -- startkde -- ksmserver

then -- ERROR : Couldnt attach th DCOP server!

after reading threads through out the internet .. I finally picked up a hint to upgrade QT -- and kde works great
