I made the folder and there is a perceptible increase in performance. Since a bunch of people are experiencing an increase, I am confused why programs do not make that folder by default.

Sorry if there's some anti-old thread semi-unspoken/only loosely enforced rule in this forum, but if it's a cache folder, wouldn't be more logical to make it as a symlink to /dev/shm, or something like that?
I've just found this thread when googling for this specific tip, and I thought I could add that seemingly reasonable complement.
