Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

Is it possible to set the default layout to monocle for all desktops without having to do them individually?

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

put

bspc desktop 1 --layout monocle
bspc desktop 2 --layout monocle
bspc desktop 3 --layout monocle
...

into your bspwmrc

Try querying for existing desktops and looping over the output.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

I've got a question: When you put a window into the pseudo-tiled state, it's centered by default. Is there away to change this behaviour, i. e. that the window isn't centered, but sticks to the upper left corner of its dedicated space?

Try xdotool for that (assuming you have a script explicitly triggering the state change).

Thanks, I've tried that, but it didn't work out… I send a window with sxhkd to pseudo-tiled state and tried several xdotools afterwards, but nothing worked. Are you sure that is possible that way?

Oh, sorry, I was thinking 'windowed' when you said 'pseudo-tiled' for some reason.  I don't know a way of doing it, then.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

Just wondering if there is a way to make all my desktops run in Manual tiling mode rather than the automatic that is set by default?

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

I migrated my bspwm configs over to another machine have noticed that bspc rule isn't working.  I tried to manually type the rules in the command line but it still isn't working.  Here is what I have.

#! /bin/sh

bspc config border_width        1
bspc config window_gap         10
bspc config top_padding        12
bspc config left_padding       0
bspc config bottom_padding     18
bspc config split_ratio         0.50
bspc config borderless_monocle  true
bspc config gapless_monocle     true
bspc config focus_by_distance   true
bspc config focus_follows_pointer true

bspc monitor -d Home Web Code Files Torrent Read Misc

bspc rule -a Gimp desktop=^7 follow=on
bspc rule -a Firefox desktop=^2
bspc rule -a mutt desktop=^6
bspc rule -a ranger desktop=^4

Note that these rules work on the original machine.

Stupid question but is the other machine as up to date as the original? i.e. are those packages installed? It's possible they have different names on the other machine, try using xprop to get the class names.

The bspwm package is now in community.

Not sure if "congratulations" is a more appropriate phrase, or "about damn time".

I still git pull and compile from source like the minimalist I am.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

is there a way in external rules to specify the screen geometry of it starting up?

I already have external rules set to open termite console as floating when it is on desktop 2.   is it possible to make it start on the lower left corner of the screen?

bw=$(bspc config border_width)
termite --geometry +${bw}-${bw}

Hmm, I am having troubles with those two lines; I would assume that they would go in the external_rules file?

I have my external_rules looking like such:

gEijnR1.png

woudl i put the "termite --geometry" in the "echo" part of the script, line 17?

also:  wouldn't "termite --geometry" be for the width and height of the terminal, instead of the x/y position of it's location?

solved:  turns out i should switch to urxvt which supports the "position" parameter.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

Just got a question about why my "scratchpad" isn't working.  I've followed the instructions on the arch wiki to test it out, I have included the snippet in the bspwmrc and the sxhkdrc, but the only exception is that I have adjusted the bspwmrc to reflect on the newer syntax, and the sxhkdrc has "termite" instead of "st":

Here are some views of my settings:

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

Is there some way to check if the current window is floating (doesn't seem to be anything in control --get-status)?

Also @3xOSC, you might want to try tdrop if you want a nicer scratchpad (shameless self-plug); it supports intial sizing and placement in a terminal independent way among other things.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

You could try parsing 'bspc query -T' - if you're going by window ID, you should be able to find the line fairly reliably with grep.

I guess it would be nice if you could do something like 'bspc query -W -w 0x220001D.floating'.

Thanks that's pretty close to want I wanted. 'bspc query -T | grep "<wid>.*f-"' works fine.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

I know this is a silly question, but I believe the default setup, should allow switching between desktops with super + 1 for example. But, this doesn't work on my system... anybody knows how to futher troubleshot this?

If I ran bspc desktop -f 2, nothing happenes, but I'm getting a `1` exit code... according to the manpage, that means some kind of failure (it does work, if I call `bspc desktop -f II` though).

Is super+2 bound to 'bspc desktop -f ^2'? You need the '^'. Are you using sxhkd?

I do... is weird because the other commands works... sxhkd has:

# .config/sxhkd/sxhkdrc
super + {1-9,0}
        bspc desktop -f ^{1-9,10}
# .config/bspwm/bspwmrc
bspc monitor -d I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X

Using `^` doesn't work either:

~ ❯❯❯ bspc desktop -f ^2
~ ❯❯❯ echo $?
1

Oh, and `bspwmrc` is exectuable too.

---------EDIT---------

I think I got it... in zsh `^` is a special character, so when using bspc desktop -f '^2' works fine.... but the problem is that it doesn't work for the sxhkdrc file.... I guess because it tries to use it from zsh... quoting there didn't work. So I'm kind of stuck.

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

Yeah, you may have to escape or quote ^ in zsh, but that shouldn't affect sxhkd. That config works for me. Does sxhkd work with other bindings? Have you restarted sxhkd since adding that? You don't have super + numbers bound anywhere else do you?

Re: bspwm — A tiling window manager based on binary space partitioning

sxhkd actually executes your shell (according to the man page).
