Other Operating Systems

Work: Arch Linux for myself, most of my co-workers are using Windows XP, one guy uses OSX, and a couple of other people use various Linux systems, mostly Debian or Gentoo.

Home: Arch Linux for me

I've been a 100% Linux user for about two years.

Noticed a few former SMGL users. I used to be a Lunar Linux user, but got sick of compile/change something/compile/doesn't work/compile, repeat x 43728506 times. Lunar was pretty slick though. Had some issues with docbook once that nearly killed my whole system though.... :x

Arch for everything - for laptop, server and desktop. Before Arch I used to use W2K because it felt most stabile of those MS OSses. But now I like to have the ultimate compatibility and security - so no compromises here!

I LOVE NETBSD! I started using it more and more. IT ROCKS! Gonna install it on a hpcmips later.

I've been eyeing the BSDs myself. The only problem I can see with them is the hideous audio support...

(Why hasn't anyone ported ALSA to *BSD? Gah!)

ALSA is GPL'd, and therefore cannot be distributed as part of the FreeBSD kernel unless the whole kernel were released under the GPL or the various people who have contributed to ALSA allow their software to be licensed under the revised BSD license.

i don't really care about sound. the only os i actually use sound in is os x. i don't think sound works on the hpcmips system anyway. i know my quad p. pro doesn't have a sound card. I managed to boot netbsd off the cf card, but found that the keyboard doesn't work. after some digging i found that you need patches for the clio (system i am using) so i need to build a cross compiler and a new kernel. checking out the sources from cvs, but its gonna take a long time. i also probably need to get a new wireless card and a bigger cf card. the wireless access point/card that came with the clio suck. the ap needs to be configured using a serial cable with some 16bit dos apps.

Doesn't have to be included in the kernel by default like it is with Linux.

They could use NAS though, that's open source IIRC. And I sort of like the idea of network-transparent sound. 8)

What do you mean? Audio support in FreeBSD rocks. No more dmixing, .asoundrc or anything obscure like that. It is much easier in FreeBSD, just add a rule about the amount of simultanious audio channels that you want to be available and you're set.

Yea I found FreeBSD's sound system way better then how it's in linux too...

As for operating systems... I started with windows, tweaked it to the max.. found it was crap .. tried slackware, then after 2 months moved on to apt debian testing, tried after 1 year FreeBSD and Arch after I found Debian has many downsides too. Conclusion: all OS are too complicated and suck (windows sucks most!). I gonna sell my newer computers, keep my p1 and 486 just to browse the web, play a little music, write and email. And hopefully I will find them so unpleasantly slow to work with that I won't stay too long on the computer and do some of the stuff I wanted to do but never did because I spent too much time fiddling with linux and bsd (before that it was windows and games)

I'll probably stick to debian, as I know that best. Even if arch is better in various ways.

Did they change FreeBSD's sound system? Because last I checked only about 5 sound cards were well-supported, and the sound modules had to be reinstalled every six months (OSS/nonfree).

A broken arch partition.

I told my windows user friend i would give him a dollar if he could break my computer without su-ing. But he cheated and su-ed, and removed /sbin recursively. So i'm downloading 0.7 right now again.

but you can easily do this with a live cd, i believe.

IIRC there are ways of preventing people from chrooting in that easily.

At any rate, you really, really should use a good, strong password, not something that coud be guessed.
