Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

I'm guessing that means it can't run the install scripts... Don't see why it couldn't do that without chrooting though.

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

Yep, it needs kernel-headers. There's some other stuff that's been added to the base system too in all likelihood, and stuff that's been removed...

means this that the archbootstrap won't work?

Now i got the same error - no kernel headers found.

Is it? Here, it halts with this error leaving no installed system or any tarball around.

Actually there probably will be problems... Some of those install scripts (e.g. perl's) generate symlinks, so I have a feeling that some stuff might not work properly.

Valid question, wrong forum, wrong thread... Try posting a new topic on it in Arch Discussion or Workstation User and you'll get an answer on it.

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

I haven't really been following this thread, but would I be right in thinking it's about getting a basic, current installation of Arch into a directory / onto a partition?
If so please have a look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qui … stallation

I've just updated it and initial tests look promising.

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

the newarch scripts works well.

If I use this comandline:

./vmlinux-2.6.15.5-bs3-tls root=/dev/root rootfstype=hostfs rootflags=../archlinux_root/archlinux/

i got another error:

Warning: unable to open an initial console.

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

That probably means that the udev install script didn't work, which could indicate that others failed too. Try chrooting in and doing migrate-udev... Some things may end up having to be reinstalled though.

(Hey Gradgrind, are you sure that the install scripts work properly with newarch?)

thanks for this good tip (migrate-udev). Now I'm a step further smile
But now he stops at "Loading UDev uevents"

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

PUHHH - i got it smile smile  -  a lot of work later  smile

The Udev Error - because i use a Kernel <=2.6.15.

I have try with 2.6.17.3 from: http://uml.nagafix.co.uk/ and it works.

But need three changes more:

1. Edit /etc/fstab.
add the following line:

/dev/ubda / auto defaults 1 1

2. Edit your /etc/inittab:
Comment out the lines with agetty:

#c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/1 linux
#c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/2 linux
#c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/3 linux
#c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/4 linux
#c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/5 linux
#c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/6 linux

Add this line:

# We launch just one console for UML:
c0:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty0 linux

3. Add lines in  /etc/securetty

# UML modification: use tty0 or vc/0
tty0
vc/0

Now it works!!! smile big_smile big_smile

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

Here the short steps:

1. Create a root filesystem:

dd if=/dev/zero of=archlinux072.img bs=1M count=700
mkfs.ext2 -F archlinux072.img

2. Mount the image:
e.g. /mnt/temp

mount -o loop archlinux072.img /mnt/temp

3. Download newarch, pacman.conf and the addpacks from:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qui … stallation

4. for the newarch script change your destination diretory for the new install (/mnt/temp)

# directory to contain the freshly installed Arch Linux
DESTDIR=/mnt/temp

5. run the newarch script

6. change the files: fstab, inittab and securetty

7. Umount the new archlinux fs:

umount /mnt/temp

8. Start with a fresh Kernel (>=2.6.15):

./kernel32-2.6.17.3 ubd0=archlinux072.img fake_ide fakehd devfs=mount eth0=tuntap,,,172.0.0.2

Big thanks to gradgrind  for his script
and thanks to Gullible Jones for his help

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

Why does this script different from the quickins script? It does exactly the same thing!

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

quickinst installs from an Arch install CD, which sometimes causes problems because some of the packages are out of date.

newarch downloads all the packages from a server, so they are very fresh. It can also install any package selection you like, which quickinst can't.

am... Did you try "quickinst ftp /path/to/new/arch http://archlinux/server"?

Re: archbootstrap 0.4 with tarbuild

@oran001:

Nope! Indeed I could have used quickinst as a starting point, but as you can see, it took me a lot longer to discover this than to write newarch, which is based on mkarch from larch.

The package selection feature of newarch is then the only significant improvement (if indeed one sees it as such).
