Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

You're suggesting that yaourt is the tool that works for everybody?  Now that's funny.

Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

if yauort doesn't work with you, that means you have problems, not yaourt

Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

@Perfect Gentleman - Please act like your username. Software is not perfect and its possible yaourt was broken. However in this case, I think the OP was just unfamiliar with using yaourt (see post 9).

Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

when dozen of users don't have problems with particular software, and someone has. it means, that someone has problems, not that software. Reading wiki and following the instructions can prevent many problems.

Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

Fine, throwing a bone out there:  Download the tarballs for Cinnamon and its dependencies.  Should those two dependencies from the AUR require their own depencies from the AUR as well, download those tarballs.  Build them in sequence, starting with the dependencies furthest down the tree.  If the chain is indeed broken somewhere--that is, some package doesn't build properly--then it's an issue with that AUR package.  In such a case, notify the maintainer on the AUR page for that package.

Unless, of course, it's some problem with a dependency of a dependency.  In such a case yaourt (or any AUR helper) can indeed simplify troubleshooting, but not unless the user actually understands what's happening in the background.  The AUR and makepkg are designed in such a way as to incite members of the community to accurately identify problems and report them immediately, rather than some individual just saying "Car gone!"

EDIT: @ Perfect Gentlemen:  There's nothing wrong with preferring something other than yaourt, nor in recommending that a new user not convolute the system with it.  Picking a fight with those of us who (if forum post numbers are actually worth a damn as a measurement) are more experienced than yourself--and derailing a thread in the process--isn't the best way to make an impression.

Re: Installing Cinnamon DE

ANOKNUSA: is i understood OP doesn't know what he did. he knows nothing about dependencies and tries to use advanced tool. in other hand, simple tool like package manager can resolve problems with installing packages with inevitable dependencies. but he doesn't wanna listen about it.
