You are right, the ffmpeg version is too far behind.
Source RPM : ffmpeg-1.0.1-1.fc18.src.rpm
There are lot of changes in API/ABI in ffmpeg
http://upstream-tracker.org/changelogs/ … gelog.html
Not sure which one broke it.

That site upstream-tracker.org seems like a real jewel, goes to my bookmarks hands down.
Also affected by this since last VLC/ffmpeg upgrade BTW, the few WMA's I own sound like pitch-shifted to something ultra treble. I see our ffmpeg has been flagged out-of-date, so I'm hoping the new version will bring a fix.

Just chiming in with a repro....
Freaked out when VLC added tons of hissy static to a subset of video files...turned out to be only the .wmv files. Installed mplayer / gnome-mplayer. .wmv files play just fine via mplayer.

Nope. Upgrading to v1.2 has no effect on this issue.

I am affected by this too. Anything I can do to fix this or to help solve this?

Read the bug report. it is fixed for 2.0.6. For now you can build it your self.
