strange, your system is SATA and you only have a ide DVD right?
could you try if it helps when you load the "generic" module?
thanks

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

Strange - the last CVS log message for the kernel26's PKGBUILD is:

'upgpkg: fixed joliet cd's and zisofs, added MSR'

It was done along with increasing pkgrel from 3 to 4. But my /boot/kconfig (and I have kernel26-2.6.14-4) has:

# CONFIG_JOLIET is not set
# CONFIG_ZISOFS is not set

yet has:

CONFIG_X86_MSR=m
CONFIG_X86_CPUID=m

In fact, my kernel doesn't support the Joliet extension. I forced reinstall of kernel26-2.6.14-4 and nothing has changed.
It seems the package on the FTP was built with wrong kconfig.

I'd say it's not related to mkinitrd. I could be a bug in 2.6.14.

Actually I only experience this with the ARCH kernel, from 2.6.13 (and also the ones on the Live and install CD).
As I said, I do not have this pb with 2.6.14rc5 and with Ubuntu Kernel. So I think this is typically a pb form the ARCH kernel (and yes not related to mkinitrd)

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

i had a kernel panic - could not mount /dev/discs/disc.... even thoguh I had changed all occurences of the old style naming in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst to the old /dev/hdX style.

turned out the initrd.img installed by pacman in /boot was the problem

i had to boot from arch cd, mount /dev/hda2 /mnt, chroot /mnt, mkinitrd auto to generate my own version

and then reboot, for it to pick up the correct /dev entry for root

Kernel 2.6.14.1 has been released. So I guess we will see 2.6.14 soon in the stable tree?

My update with the one from testing was quiet simple smile

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

Sorry to be a bother, but I was affected by this and I can't seem to solve the problem.

Being unable to boot from grub, I put my Arch CD and tried booting from it, using 'arch-noscsi root=/dev/discs/disc1/part4' since it's where my root partition is. Still, for some reason, it is impossible to mount my partition and I get to the CD filesystem - pretty useless to me. I can mount partitions afterwards but I can't seem to chroot into my system.

My plan was to roll over to the previous kernel - I would've had no clue as to how to downgrade it but hey - since I don't have the time right now to bother with initrd, udev and such.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

Dude, read the freakin' front page once in a while will you? You can't use DevFS device names any more!

Just change it to whatever it would be under a static /dev.

Thanks for your calm, patience and understanding.

Still, even with your oh so precious advice, it still not working. I can't mount my partition on startup, even with good ol' static dev.

Some news about that. A home made 2.6.14.1 (with the same patches applied to 2.6.14-ARCH) does not lead to the High Cpu Load.
So : either it has been fixed, or it is a feature of the kernel that I did not use...
Hope this can help...

Downloaded arch0.7.1 and burned CD.  Kernel 2.6.14-4.

System loaded and booted OK.

USB mouse and keyboard.  USB mouse has scroll wheel.

Scrollwheel does not function and xorg seems correctly listed in hwd -x.

Any ideas?

Also installed /sbin/hwdetect which functions OK big_smile

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

I'm so lazy, and so fitting into the category of people who like to break their system, I just installed mkinitrd and then force upgraded to the testing kernel.  Had to reinstall video driver, and noticed a couple of packages (module-init-tools and initscripts hit the front page just as I finished, so I went ahead and upgraded them)...but...

I just noticed that firestarter fails to run as a daemon now.

BTW, no problems w/scsi HDD or IDE DVDRW drive (though I've not tried to burn a DVD yet) as of yet.  Autofs works (I changed to non-devfs naming a long time ago in its config file).  Also, I'm not using "hwd" daemon, so the modules section of rc.conf appear to be doing their job, and mkinitrd boots what I need.  I did have a SCSI DVD drive, but I got sick of its huge cable in my case blocking all the flow, so I took it out.

I guess I could just try reinstalling firestarter, but I thought I'd post here first.

Do you use a nvidia vga card? Then pacman -S nvidia and make sure you change the xorg.cong afetrwards. You can look at the wiki pages for more info.

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

sOLar;

Pleased to hear from you on the subject of the scroll mouse parameter.

The present install of arch 0.7.1  requires the user to utilize the following procedure to get the xorg.conf display:

    #hwd -x
    # cd /etc/X11
    # nano xorg.conf.hwd

The following is the listing of the pertinent mouse device parameters for USB mouse as provided by the install of kernel 2.6.14-4:
============================================================
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "USB Mouse"
        Driver          "mouse"
        Option          "Device"                "/dev/input/mice"
        Option          "SendCoreEvents"        "true"
        Option          "Protocol"              "IMPS/2"
        Option          "ZAxisMapping"          "4 5"
        Option          "Buttons"               "5"
EndSection
==============================================================

I assume from this detail that the correct parameter information is installed in my system.  The scroll does not function.
My system does not have nvidia agp.  I have 8500LE ATI agp without accel.

I appreciate any help in resolving this difficulty.

Happy Thanksgiving

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

Just want to mention that I figured out my problem.  I had recently started running a new processor that is considerably faster than my old one, and it looks like the speed increase had firestarter overlapping the network daemon, so I put firestarter at the end of the line with a "@" in front of it.  Sorry to bother.

Is the stuff in the manuals and in the wiki only right for 0.7 and worthless for 0.7.1 or is it the only change with the kernel and initscript?

Upgrade via -Syu on initscripts0.7.1-5 required command -Syuf in order to install.

After install, rcsysinit file was opened and the required dataline for "Detecting Required Modules" was added.

Reboot was successful. big_smile

I have a problem with high cpu load on 2.6.14.2-1.
'top' doesn't say which process that is using the cpu, just that  it's <10% idle, so I would guess it's the kernel.
I'm going to try the archck4 kernel now to see if it fixes my problems.

Try to compile your own kernel and delete all you don't need. I had the same pb and this is the only way I managed to get out of it. (see my post earlier in this topic)
It is strange that no many people experience this pb..

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

I'm having a bit of a problem getting initrd to boot with my machine as well.  I'm getting a similar error to what was reported earlier with /bin/sh cant accces tty.  I'm pretty sure I've figured out the cause of the problem but I'm not quite sure on how to fix it.

First of I am using a custom 2.6.14 patched with ck5.  I built it with the PKGBUILD from the 2.6.14.2-1 package in testing using the config from that package.  I actually wanted to see if this would be any faster then archck which I have been running since I don't use any of the extra stuff thats included in archck.  Anyway enough reasoning here is my problem.

It runs through the first 90% of the initrd loading fine, but once it tries to mount the real root filesystem it encounters a problem.  It's trying to mount /dev/hdc3 as the root filesystem, which under the working archck kernel w/o initrd is correct.  But if I scroll up in the messages its giving me as it was booting and I look at the list of diferent hd devices its been detecting I find they are in a new order.  My cdrw and dvd have moved from hda and hdb to hde and hdf, my 2 160gb data drives have moved from hde and hdg to hda and hdc (both of these drives are unformated).  The data drives are attached to an onboard MegaRAID IDE card which as of yet I have not been able to get to work so both of those drives remain unformated.  My former main drive with my root filesystem has been moved from hdc to hdg.  Once I found this I though no problem, I ran mkinitrd again and specified /dev/hdg3 as the root device instead of letting it auto detect.  I rebooted and now it is looking for the root filesystem in the right place but it is still unable to fine it.  I cd'd into /dev at the busybox prompt to figure out why and I found that it only makes nodes for hda-hdd.  Is there any way I can get around this?  I noticed in the messages as I was scrolling through them that I actualy detected and initialized something megaraid related and I'm kind of hoping I can get that stupid raid controler to work once I can get it to boot this new kernel.

andy

[EDIT]
I seem to have answered my own question.
It wasn't that hard once I read up on initrd.
Anyway this is how I did it.
[all this assumes that you have already run mkinirtd]

Mount initrd image rw so I can edit it:
# cd /tmp
# mkdir initrd
# gunzip < /boot/initrd-2.6.14-ck5-ARCH.img > initrd.img
# mount: -o loop initrd.img initrd

Then I added the following lines to linuxrc in the initrd image to make the device nodes for hdg:
mknod /dev/hdg3 b 34 3

I placed it after the line to make the node for hdd12 but it probably doesn't matter where it is as long as it comes before it tries to actually mount the filesystem.

(btw you can figure out the major and minor numbers by reading devices.txt in the documentation directory of your kernel source.  You'd have this if you built a custom kernel like I did, but if not I'm sure you can get it from kernel.org or some where else on the web.)

Then I copied my new initrd image into /boot, don't foget to back up incase the new initrd image doesn't work (not that the old one did actually work, but its always good to backup):
# umount initrd
# mv /boot/initrd-2.6.14-ck5-ARCH.img /boot/initrd-2.6.14-ck5-ARCH.img.bak
# gzip < initrd.img > /boot/initrd-2.6.14-ck5-ARCH.img

After that it was just a matter of making a new fstab to reflect the new names my drives would have and then rebooting.

I'm now in the new kernel and everything is running fine, except that stupid raid controler.  I didn't really think it was going to work anyway.

Try changing the /dev/input/mice to /dev/psaux.
nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root.
I don't know how to install ATI drivers since I use nvidia hardware. You can easily use the ati drivers provided automatically, only when you want to play games it can become a problem.

Re: [kernel] 2.6.14 : IMPORTANT CHANGES - upgraders please read

sOLar;

In this kernel 2.6.13, I use the following to reach x-org.conf:
===============================================
cd /etc/X11
nano xorg.conf
================================================
The listing in this kernel 2.6.13 for the USB Mouse is identical to that for the kernel 2.6.14-4.  In this kernel,2.6.13, the scroll wheel operates correctly.

It seems there may be a problem with the ordering of the installed USB devices.  They get initialized almost as the last thing during boot-up, just before the arch log-in and the subsequent loading of Kde.

I have confidence that the parameters loaded for the USB mouse are correct in Kernel 2.6.14-4 as loaded by the arch 0.7.1CD.

It remains a mystery as to why it fails to scroll.

Thanks for your reply big_smile
