Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

@bohoomill just wanted to confirm that the latest package update (freetype2-infinality-ultimate 2.6.2-4) solves the issue with Chrome/Chromium. Thanks!

Hello!

With a fresh updated installation of Arch and the repos added to /etc/pacman.conf

Seems you didn't sign the key. See the first post here and the wiki [1].

EDIT: Whoops, I read all over the failed command. The wiki has a note about that. See the link I gave you and execute dirmngr as root to make that work.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

bbarcher, just a quick question. Do you by any chance run a 32-bit system? You can check this with uname -m. If it returns x86_64, you are running 64-bit. If it returns i686, you are running 32-bit. In the 32-bit case, pacman tries to download the repository from http://bohoomil.com/repo/multilib/i686, which returns a 404 because it doesn't exist. This is the case because you do not need multilib on a 32-bit system.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

I must be doing something completely wrong, because my infinality-settings.sh is being completely ignored.  I installed Infinality-bundle from the repo bohoomil setup and everything seems ok, I have the new rendering.  I then copied over infinality-settings.sh from /usr/share/doc/freetype2-infinality-ultimate into /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/.  I uncommented and changed the line export INFINALITY_FT="ultimate3" to export INFINALITY_FT="osx" just to see the difference and restarted.  Upon restart, nothing changed the fonts look exactly the same.  I've tried changing other settings in this file and nothing seems to matter, no changes take effect.

Can you check if the environment variable is showing up for a shell with "env | grep ^INFI"?

You can inspect the environment of a running process like this to see if maybe your desktop hasn't loaded the environment variable:

sudo cat /proc/$(pgrep -o firefox)/environ | tr '\0' '\n'

@Ropid that's a cool trick ... I didn't know you could do that!

@jmayniac I believe infinality-settings.sh (or anything in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/) gets ignored if you have your own custom .xinitrc.

Just wondering if there were any suggestions on how to avoid color fringing on many of the typeface glyphs? Many characters, particularly 'm' are verging towards the red on a black background.

Well, the Wiki covers the entire DIY procedure and assumes you have installed Infinality fontconfig settings and runtime file as they are available in the AUR. This is not a case here at all. infinality-bundle is meant to be installed in a single step that should give the user what their want of the box, without obligatory user intervention. (See the user notes above for details. It answers the majority of possible questions.) It doesn't come with all the settings but mine, so there is really nothing to write about but 'issue pacman -U foo.$arch.tar.xz and enjoy'. smile If the project catches up, I will surely modify the Wiki article so that it offers yet another, and hopefully the easiest, option of getting a working Infinality setup. Now I'm not really sure what I should write there as using my packages makes nearly all steps covered there, well, not needed anymore. smile

Correct me if I'm wrong. But I had to

echo "[infinality-bundle]" | sudo tee -a /etc/pacman.conf; echo 'Server = http://bohoomil.com/repo/$arch' | sudo tee -a /etc/pacman.conf; sudo pacman-key -r 962DDE58; sudo pacman-key --lsign-key 962DDE58; sudo pacman -Syyu; sudo pacman -S infinality-bundle

And I was wondering why I had to go through all that trouble instead of just

sudo pacman -S infinality-bundle

I feel like that wasn't explained. At least in the link you sent me.

That is because this is a separate, unofficial repository. It needs to be set up before you can use it. Such is life when using community projects.

Re: infinality-bundle: good looking fonts made (even) easier

Can somebody tell me if I've missed something? I no longer seem to have any manual pages for the fontconfig utilities (fc-match etc.). I'm sure that I used to have these or, if not, certainly I've had more information about the utilities than I can currently find. At any rate, is there an additional package I need to install to get the manual pages?

Or the user manual if that's more appropriate. I don't have e.g. /usr/share/doc/fontconfig/fontconfig-user.html.

There's man-pages in the "fontconfig" package, but there aren't man-pages in "fontconfig-infinality-ultimate". I wiped pacman's cache a while ago and I don't have any old fontconfig-infinality-ultimate file versions to look at to see if there were man pages in those.

There were man pages in fontconfig-infinality-ultimate-2.11.1-29 but they have vanished from 2.11.1-30.

I thought I used to have them. Is this a bug, do you think?

I rely heavily on man pages, so if these are no longer included it would be a major downside of using infinality for me just because it would no longer be easy to maintain the system in the state to which I have become accustomed!

Quick question:

I have installed the infinality-bundle, and ibfonts-meta-base packages. I wanted to know that if I were to now install more fonts, can I place them in ~/.fonts or do they have to come from the ib fonts repo and installed via pacman?

Do you guys have any idea what causes certain websites to be helvetica? This forum isn't for example, but Facebook and Github are. I don't know exactly what's going on but the only thing I feel like I can blame is Infinality since it handles the font stuff.

@raghap, @raghap
it's not the web fonts, it's a problem of the aliases in your .conf files
I'm almost sure that there are missing "replacement" for needed fonts.

Hi. I've just installed infinality-bundle, infinality-bundle-multilib and ibfonts-meta-base. Is this all I need? I just want to use default settings.
Or should I make changes to or copy infinality-settings.sh file? It's not present in
/etc/profile.d/
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d
Thank you.
