Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

How easy will it be to upgrade to xorg 7 when it is out of testing?  Also, did you just say that XGL will be included with xorg7?  That would be sweet!!!  lol

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

XGL is not included in xorg 7. Xorg 7 is already out.
What he said is xgl will be apart of the next xorg release. xorg7.1 (maybe)
It's already in a branch in cvs so it makes sence to be included in future releases.

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

Just had to brag somewhere: I've finally since a few hours got Xgl + compiz running on my Arch Linux system! smile Don't expect a PKGBUILD or any instructions from me though, i'm a quite new Arch user and don't want to cause confusion or destroy stuff for you. I'm sure I'm not the only one succeeded building it on Arch but i just felt so proud sitting and rolling around the Cube tongue
This is just for letting you know it works even on Arch (and teasing you a littlebit) wink
It's just so nice.   tongue

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

OK, I am a little confused as to what it actually is that I keep seeing in these Xgl videos - for starters they all seem to use gnome, and there's no way I'm going to start using gnome to get any of the funky effects. Are the wobbles dependant on a window manager, or do they just come from having Compiz running? Can I use Xgl and the weird effects it has without using gnome? Does it have to run nested inside another X server, or can I use it from startx?

Thanks in advance for any shedding of light.

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

Personally i'm running it with all the effects on XFCE, which works nice, but you have to install some gnome packages to be able to build gnome-window-decorator that runs with compiz, while you're not dependent on gnome to actually run Xgl. You're right about that in all the videos they use Gnome. I would have posted a video here of me running it on Xfce if i had anywhere to host it.
The effects are as of now dependant on gnome-window-decorator as mentioned, and compiz. I have successfully run it in both a nested X server in a window, and in fullscreen using a startx-like script.

OK thanks for that rasta, one final question:

What exactly is gnome-window-decorator and what does it do?

Ah, composite.  I use fglrx, which doesn't support composite.  So screwed. big_smile

Actually you're not. I'm running this on a Radeon 9800 Pro - although yet without dri acceleration, still it runs quite smoothly, maybe a little CPU-heavy. But from what i've heard, both ATI and NVIDIA are working on native support for Xgl-stuff in their drivers, so i'll guess most of us will have to try to have some patience. smile

What type of system are you running this on?
Specs please big_smile
I assume your using software opengl if you have a ati card. Are you using mesa-cvs?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, here are my specs:
- AMD Athlon XP 2700+
- 1024mb RAM
- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
- using mesa-cvs, xgl with tag xgl-0-0-1 from cvs,
Also from CVS: glitz, libsvg, libsvg-cairo, cairo, compiz

Good luck to all the PKGBUILD:ers out there! smile

rasta, when you built xgl did you by chance disable the compile of xorg?

WillySilly wrote:

I used almost the same arguments as in the latest overlay from hanno:

./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/fdo --enable-glx --enable-dri --enable-xkb --enable-xgl --enable-xglx --disable-xorg --disable-xprint --disable-dmx --disable-xvfb --disable-xnest

Unfortunately my .bash_history is now cluttered with gnome-window-manager and compiz-related stuff, so i wouldn't be able to reproduce each step i took to make a succesful build. Feel free to ask more about my build procedure.

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

The capture is made on a crappy digital camera and isn't very exciting at all, it just proves this is working on Arch. smile
I will try to make a better capture tomorrow (going to bed now), and I would be very grateful if somebody had a tips on a screen capture application that works in Xgl (xvidcap does not), because using the digicam it's hardly worth to look at. Gnite!

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

I can confirm that Xgl can be build and runs on ArchLinux (ati radeon 9700 mobility). It's fun to watch those windows wobbling across the screen, but after a time it causes a headache... Xgl / compiz is indeed very cute smile . I probably will have some time thursday evening to finalize my pkgbuilds, but i cant promise nothing...

Re: XGL., anyone wanna join the ride?

yea i'm looking foward to the new alt-tab, transparencies and fade in/out. even the expose type effect i might use. but hopefully some more interesting effects come out for compiz. i believe its built so that plugins can be loaded easily so i look foward to some more interesting, and less headaching effects.

A video that was posted ealier does show that xvidcap works with Xgl. The terminal window that xvidcap was started in can be seen through some of the video. The beginning also clearly shows which command line parameters were used. Here is a link to the video.

I tried to install Xgl with no success. I hope that somebody does manage to make a PKGBUILD for Xgl. My local area LUG will be having an installfest in a little over a month and I would like to show off Xgl.

Oh yes, that's one of the many errors I remember from yesterday night. Just use one of the patches from this package: http://dev.gentoo.org/~hanno/xgl-overla … 20.tar.bz2
(xgl/x11-base/xgl/files/xgl-mesa-makefile.diff)
It's not there in the newest overlay, don't know why...maybe it's fixed in the latest CVS, but when I compiled it I used that patch.
Keep up the work!

ok, It seems a lot of people are trying to get XGL working......

There are already deb packages and gentoo ebuild over the internet.
I'd like to help, but I'm stuck with the Xorg 7.0 compilation from the CVS. Did someone succed in compiling it? How?

Thanks.
