For my information, what generates the information in /sys? Its generated at bootup.

the kernel generates it, i think the pci drivers are doing this.

I thought also. In this case, it works only with the latest kernel(s). For the Arch CD installer, its ideal.

About the name "hwdetect", personally I feel its a bit misleading when not "detecting" but reads information what exist. Instead of "hwdetect" I would call it: "hwreader".

Entered the details for this feature from the initial BLOG info.

Reboot failed with no sound and no USB mouse.

The entry in /sbin:

status "Detecting Required Modules" /sbin/hwdetect-load-modules

The above entry is verbatim.

The boot-up listed....detecting required modules....fail.....

What is wrong with the feature?

It's /sbin/hwdetect -load-modules i.e. with a space.

Yes. hwdetect is the name of the script.

latest version is bombing out on me....
kernel oops...
APIC error cannot write (0xeee)

then freezes only fix is a hard reboot....
had to use a rescue disk and comment out hwdetect to boot..:(

odd thing is works fine from a term if already booted must be loading something in the wrong orded....
any idea's???

new hwdetect is available at the bugreport, now it detects PNP devices too, the hotplug trick is not needed anymore.

I'd like to know if hwd is a dependency for hwdetect...
because I updated initscripts today and used the new rc.conf which worked fine. Then I thought I wouldn't need hwd anymore and remove hwd, lshwd and ddcxinfo-arch (which was a dependency for hwd) and rebooted, but the system freezed when trying to load the modules.

I was lucky and had the hwd (and dependencies) package still in the cache so I could reinstall them by using the install disk, but now I wonder why hwdetect doesn't have hwd or something else like that as a dependency, since it seems it can't load the modules on its own

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say

hey baze and mpie, would be nice to get your kernel logs when it hangs to see what modules cause the trouble,

Using the latest version as per the feature request, everything that I would expect to load now loads. I still have to have evdev and rtc in rc.conf MODULES - evdev in particular, as xorg won't start without it. I also used to load snd_pcm_oss from rc.conf, but tbh, I don't think I need it anymore - at least, everything seems to be working without it.

evdev is supported by latest release, along with other PNP stuff

EDIT:
rtc + pcspkr is also supported
pcm-oss modules are loaded via modprobe.conf

Cool. I'm getting evdev now alright, but still no rtc.

tpowa all is well again with the new version.... very nice

the same module that hangs hotplug... hw_random
it's used by intel agp controllers if you still want the log I will mail it..

Ahh, here's a problem: my machine has a working parallel port, so hwdetect ought to load parport-pc, but it's only loading parport. To get my printer working, I need to load parport-pc myself. Loading lp with parport, but not parport-pc, isn't enough - /dev/lp0 won't show up.

have you tried the latest hwdetcect?
i changed to modprobe -i in it that should solve this problem
and you should change your modprobe.conf to newest version, then lp is laoded automatically too if parport_pc is loaded.

Very good job tpowa. I'm not using any kind of automatic module loading on boot but hwdetect (BTW don't change the name - it suits very well) is very helpful with customizing initrd config on my notebook.
