Hi everyone ,
i have been following this thread from the beginning ,
i just like to ask for your opinions on this :
should i use the noatime flag in my fstab ?
does have any benefit ?
am using an ext4 filesystem on my root partition , & i have the discard flag enabled .
Honestly, I evaluated this at the time, and don't have the exact details, but this is my fstab (exluding swap):
UUID=0d145bc4-d4d4-4be8-8227-fa73d8f47113 / ext4 rw,relatime,noatime,data=ordered 0 1
PARTUUID=00d6dda5-dc38-4d34-9a9f-3302514b9e42 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
noatime should reduce wear on the SSD by avoiding access_time writes when you open files, hence maximising SSD life.
I believe I had to set something in mutt due to noatime, so keep that in mind if you use mutt.

I also see the flag "discard" in the "Enable TRIM by Mount Flags" section of
XFCE4 under Arch on Honor MagicBook

Hi :)
I'm using a 2013 Air 11" and had a great time setting up arch - thanks to this great thread and the macbook wiki page.. Thanks to all contributors!
Unfortunately, I'm not able to get a really stable wifi connection using the broadcom wl drivers - nothing in dmesg, but a huge amount of dropped packets..
My wifi card info is:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43a0] (rev 03)
I tried the current version (248) of the driver in combination with the current kernel as well as the current lts kernel.
In the aur comments for the brodcom-wl and broadcom-wl-dkms packages I found some notes saying that the instability was introduced in the newest version and that a downgrade to 141 would solve them for some users. Unfortunately, this version has the same problem for me, in combination with the lts kernel as well as with the current kernel version..
Is someone else using the Broadcom BCM3460 and is able to get a stable connection?
What combination of wl driver and kernel version are you using?
Thank you

I haven't updated in a while but I do get stable wifi connection, always now a days. As of now, I was using
3.15.5-2 kernel
6.30.223
Currently updating my packages. Will post the exact versions here after the update completes (to check if my stability is still there)

This is a strange issue I started encountering some 10 hours back, but have already faced it twice since then. I have a usb-ethernet adapter. The adapter stops working, and USB ports dont work. I get this message on dmesg. I am posting it here as sprunge may delete it soon.

The numbers on the left go from 1->2767, each taking 30 seconds, making jump of 5. That long, my pc cannot reboot, cannot use usb devices. After that the link is up again and everything works.
I tried removing asix module with modprobe -r, but that also doesn't work throughout the process.
Curiously, powertop also doesn't work until this get's over. I think it is because system daemons are getting blocked. Any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT : I saw the ethernet device's name being changed by systemd, after which this issue started. I have now written a udev rule giving this asix usb->ethernet a permanent name. So far, in 12 hours, this problem has not occured. I will post again if it occurs.
EDIT2 : It occured again. Looks like a kernel bug, but it has been on bug reports since as old as kernel 2.6. Not kernel specific then. Hopeless case. No ethernet for me, then. Phone tether works flawless though. I am guessing it's asix hardware that's causing it.
i'm having the same issue.
i use a 4 port usb hub (that works fine one multiple machines). every 3 or 4 reboots i get that same error:
asix 1-1.2:1.0 (unregistered net_device): Failed to send software reset: ffffff92
a million times and arch never boots. if i pull the usb and reboot 1/2 the time it fixes the issue. but the other have i get the same problem again or usb doesn't work at all. but reboot a few more times seems to fix it. it just happened 10 mins ago and i'm not using it just fine. super odd.
i've never seen this issue on my dell laptop running arch with "almost" the same packages and using the same usb hub... mac's *pish!*

I have been running arch on my macbook for the last year without much issue, until today. I decided to try out btrfs without researching as much as I probably should. After converting my arch partition from ext4 to btrfs, refind is no longer seeing arch. I am dual booting OSX and arch with refind installed from osx. I have made sure refind has the btrfs driver, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Does 'scan_all_linux_kernels' not work for btrfs, meaning I will have to manually configure in order to boot into arch with btrfs?

So following instructions from here and the wiki and various other places I seem to have gotten pretty much everything I wanted to work up and running. It's very pleasant to use Arch instead of OSX. There is one more annoying bug for me. When I suspend by closing the lid and resume, after a minute or so it will automatically suspend again. At which point the only way to awaken it is to close the lid and open it again, only for the process to repeat. I am using the powerdown commands and have acpid enabled as well. Any ideas?

hi everyone ,
so i updated to osx 10.10 ,
and now i have kworker hoging one of the cores whenever i boot arch ,

Looks like we've hit choppy waters with wifi again... The broadcom-wl-dkms 6.30.223.248-2 driver seems very unstable, as I cannot connect at all on linux 3.17, as mentioned on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms. Has anyone had a bright idea, or are we stuck waiting for broadcom to fix this?
Offline
I've had no wifi issues with 3.17.1-1-ARCH. Haven't rebooted since upgrading to 3.17.2-1 though.
Lemme know if there's some details that might help.

Hi there fellow suffering Macbook Air users,
until recently (a few months ago) I was able to revive the sd-card-reader after suspending the laptop with:
# echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan
I'm not 100% sure that I recall this correctly, but it was either this or something very similar.
This doesn't work anymore. Right now the only way to get the card-reader working after resuming is to reboot the laptop which is very unsatisfactory.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem? Is there a fix / workaround that does not involve rebooting?
Thanks

Nope, no issues on 3.17.2-1-ARCH, x86_64.

I've got the same problem, and I've got no solution (I didn't know about echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan, someone should document all these hidden features (or make them work without fishy tricks)).
Nope, no issues on 3.17.2-1-ARCH, x86_64.
No issues? I wonder if is a kernel change then, because I've got 3.17.1, and it doesn't work (or maybe I should just reboot several times and see if that helps). Which broadcom-wl version do you have, and has it got the latest patch from the AUR?
Offline
I had no issues 3.17.1 or 3.17.2. I used my laptop extensively with both. I'm using broadcom-wl-dkms.
Offline
That's weird... Are you using NetworkManager, or something else?
Offline
NetworkManager. With WPA2-PSK and WPA2-802.1x networks.
Offline
Looks like my mba's just playing tricks then. I've updated to linux 3.17.2 and recompiled the driver (broadcom-wl-dkms) and tried connecting to a WPA2-PSK network and it repeatedly asks for the password. Do you use the keyring to store the WiFi passwords? It seems to be failing with
(wlp3s0): device state change: need-auth -> failed (reason 'no-secrets') [60 120 7]
So maybe something further up the stack has broken. I'll have to do some more digging...
Offline
You *need* to install a keyring, otherwise NetworkManager won't connect to WEP/WPA{1,2} networks.
Offline
Not necessarily, you can make it store the passwords in a unencrypted file. I'm using the normal KDE keyring, I'm just trying to find the problem, as if WiFi works fine with you in this kernel, there must be something wrong with my setup.

Anyone here running Yosemite? I upgraded and am having issues getting refind to see my arch install. I followed these instructions from the Refind website to get it working with the new bootloader from apple.
http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/yosemite.html
So I now have refind installed on an hfs+ partition called esp and I can boot into osx, but not arch. I do not have a boot partition or grub installed, just a root directory where I installed arch, which I thought was working fine in the past.
Also refind is taking me through two bootloader menus, which is kind of strange. One will show osx or any linux medias attached, and the next one will have a selection for each hfs+ partition.
Starting to regret updating to the latest OSX.
Edit: I figured out I just needed to copy over the drivers to the directory refind was installed to. Rookie mistake.

I found it, it was in /usr/lib/udev/99-systemd.rules
However, even after reverting it to as it was, i have the issue. I have 0 brightness on each boot. I have to increase brightness after logging in blind. What could be the issue?
So far, I installed the mba6x_backlight module with pacman -U
Reanalyzing it, the brightness actually works initially, drops to 0 just before I get the tty. Going to other tty also gives me 0 brightness.
I'm still having this issue also. Did you ever find a solution? I'm getting nowhere with it.

I'm planning to get a 13" MacBook Air (the 6.2). According to this thread, wifi seems to be unstable.
I plan to ditch OSX and use Arch only.
Would you guys recommend a different laptop ? Or is it worth it ?
