Please see the chown(1) and chmod(1) man pages.  Learn to use those, and you can get control of your data back.

cfr is right, you have solved a number of issues in getting your system going and you're going to give up now?  That seems senseless to me.

If you haven't already pulled the trigger on the reinstallation, check to see if yuo actually ever created a user in the first place.  If you did it during isntallation, maybe you did it outside the chroot.  Check the contents of /etc/passwd, and if you see the user you though your created there, then something's awry.  But if it isn't there, you never really created it in the first place.
