Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

There seems to be a problem with Lato in LibreOffice.
When I try to make a sentence italic, it shows only question marks (screenshot).
This only happens with the T1 version, not with the OTF or TTF version.

edit: fixed link

Huh. I opened a Word document somebody sent me the other day and much of it consisted of question marks. I wonder if the problem is related. (I would have expected it to just substitute a font if it was missing the requested one, and I don't usually see this problem.) I assumed the document was weird in some way but now I'm wondering...

I swapped T1 for OTF and updated ibfonts-meta-extended, which now pulls both Open Sans TTF and Lato OTF. Please, check if everything looks OK.

So when updating I've been encountering these error messages:

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

The group infinality-bundle-fonts is not meant to be installed as a whole I guess (or bohoomil forgot to remove a package after switch the font version) You should pick and choose the fonts you want. A preselected fontset can be installed with the metapackages ibfonts-meta-base and optionally ibfonts-meta-extended.

Follow the wiki, and install ibfonts-meta-extended (or just base).

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

Perfect Gentelman, infinality-bundle-fonts is not supposed to be installed as I stated in the opening post. My fault, indeed: I should have removed obsolete information, but simply forgot. Instead, the collection is distributed as two meta packages plus additional font families you install only if you need them: they mostly belong to the infinality-bundle-fonts-extra group. The best you can do is simply pull the entire ibfonts-meta-extended collection. This will install everything you may want and need. Besides, obligatory updates to the group will be automatically taken care of, which means that a typical 'pacman -Syu' will do all the job for you.

Thanks to all who had come to the OP's aid before me.

@Jristz, not really that weird: if you had inspected 37-repl-global-free.conf, you would encounter this:

<!-- Webdings => - -->
<!-- Symbol => - -->

It means I was looking for relevant replacements. wink The solution I have been testing recently is Symbola (now in the ib-fonts repo), which should provide all the necessary symbols, ideograms, icons, etc. you may need. Check the complete Symbola font preview for details.

What do you have in mind? Do you plan to reorder the glyphs and remove unnecessary entries and make webdings and wingdings compatible fonts?

@Jristz
If you just want to use the symbols and you don't need compatibility, I suggest you just search for a fitting unicode symbol, here is a comparison to wingdings. You may find others when you open the Symbola preview.
http://www.alanwood.net/demos/wingdings.html

If all fails, use a free symbol font like fontawesome. Here is an overview of different fonts, many of them should be available as ttf or otf files.

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

Symbola provides plenty of icons found in either Wingdings or Webdings, not only characters supposed to be found in a symbol-type font. Some of them are probably mapped over the same unicode blocks as original Wing/Web-dings, others not: those of you who use any of them on a regular basis can test it in your existing documents to verify the mapping. However, it does not mean Symbola is a 1:1 replacement for either of the fonts: had I been able to find such, I would have obviously included it in the collection. For now, please try to test it and asses its usability, and if you know about a better option, just let me know.

Re: infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch

I'm getting into a bit of a muddle. I've started having problems with fonts in both LibreOffice and Okular. I mentioned earlier that I'd received a document which contained large amounts of text displayed as question marks. Today I managed to create some. Moreover, even when I got everything displayed OK, I exported to PDF but the PDF did not print properly. I just got random characters scattered across whitespace. This is font dependent. Change the font, the problem disappears. (This may not be an issue with your fonts - I have to check.)

In Okular, I'm having inline text annotations showing up blank. The problem isn't consistent - occasionally, it is OK but generally not. I've not had this issue with Okular before. I've tried changing the font and font size of an annotation but it doesn't seem to help. (I was using Droid Serif 9. I tried 10 instead. Then I tried Noto Serif.) I tried using all pop-up notes instead but I don't seem to be able to print those. The text is there - I can view it by hovering over the annotation, but it doesn't display. I also checked that it doesn't display in acroread either - again, I can view the text by hovering over the inline note, but it is not displayed inline although the size of the note looks about right as if it is taking up space.

Any work-arounds? Or advice? I'm trying to think if I've missed anything...

Can you share a sample file you have problems with? Try running 'fc-cache -fr' for the start…

Edit: Do you embed fonts when exporting to PDF? Please, see available options in 'File => Export as PDF…'.

Thanks. I probably should have thought of that. This helped a lot with Okular. Everything except symbols now display correctly and even the checkmarks appear if I open the document in acroread.

Edit: Do you embed fonts when exporting to PDF? Please, see available options in 'File => Export as PDF…'.

I'll check this next time I do this in LibreOffice. I suspect that I do since it has always worked just fine in the past and 3/4 documents worked fine today. However, I'll definitely check. (I'm not as familiar with LibreOffice as with e.g. doing this in pdfLaTeX so I am a bit less certain of exactly how I've got things set up.)

I added two decent looking, screen-optimized fonts to the [ib-fonts-extra] group: Amble and Noticia Text. fontconfig-infinality-ultimate was updated to reflect the changes. As always, you can run

$ pacman -Qc fontconfig-infinality-ultimate

to consult the changelog.

No, they were not added to the meta package. You need to install them individually:

I never knew you could do that - thanks.

I think there may possibly be an error in the changelog as it mentions Amble and Signika Text but not Noticia Text (and I think Signika was added a little while ago already?).

EDIT: Cool - Noticia even says it supports Welsh! smile

I just noticed that for some fonts there are several versions installed.

For example, what is the difference between Noto Sans and Noto Sans UI?
