[SOLVED] Kernel 3.12 gives black screen during boot.

This has also resurfaced from me when upgrading linux (3.12.6-1 -> 3.12.7-1). Rebooting with linux-lts 3.10.25-1 works fine.

This is in an old netbook with BIOS, not UEFI, and integrated Intel graphics which have given me trouble in the past, not sure if related. No special modules as far as I can tell, no encrypted partitions. The rest of my machines boot fine.

I have two 3.12.6-1 kernels (stock and custom) which both booted just fine a few days ago using gummiboot 41-1. Yesterday i was tinkering with tmpfs on /var/log and apparently something failed on unmount during shutdown. This made me unable to get even to post, and eventually i resolved the problem by changing to backup bios which booted Windows from gummiboot just fine. I flashed the main bios (Gigabyte UD3H F19 -> F20) and after that everything UEFI boots but Arch installation and Arch USB both hang on boot. Screen does not go to sleep, it simply shows nothing and Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't help. nomodeset options have no effect either.

EDIT: arch image was version ARCH_201401, i'll test with older one later. -> Nope, didn't work. maybe reinstalling gummiboot helps.

EDIT2: Ubuntu iso boots succesfully from USB in EFI mode. i think it uses grub.

A "me too "on this one. Upgrading to "linux-3.12.7-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz" broke my system, resulting in a black screen after gummiboot. Reinstalling gummiboot / rebuilding initramfs didn't help.

I eventually downloaded to linux-3.12.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz from ARM.

System is a Lenovo X230 laptop, BIOS info as follows:

Similarly, I had troubles booting after the 3.12.7-2 upgrade. At first glance it was a black screen problem as described in the post but it turned out it just was booting really slowly, leaving the computer by itself for an hour or so eventually brought it up to runlevel 1. Just leaving this here in case it helps someone.

I opted for a clean install to solve the problem. After it the 3.12.7-2 kernel ran smoothly on the same system.

@denn1s: I'm definitely not an expert on this, but slow (VERY slow booting was one symptom in some cases of a libcrypt update that only partially updated. Definitely not an issue since you already reinstalled, but just a little post mortem on what your issue may have been.

libgcrypt was one of the packages that were updated the same day my boot problems started. Unless gummiboot uses files in arch partition it makes no sense that arch liveusb doesn't EFI boot anymore even though it did before (Dec 2013 and Jan 2014 versions). tried booting with syslinux and it said vmlinuz-linux...ok -> initramfs-linux.img..ok and hangs immediately after that.

Got slow boot time as well since I updated last monday. Went from boot time of <10s to ~40s, the screen remains blank while booting. I'm not using gummiboot, however I'm using LUKS. I've included the list of packages (libgcrypt among them) that were updated then below.

Issue was solved when linux was upgraded to 3.12.8-1. Here is how the "relevant" part of dmesg looks like now

Unfortunately no. With my Dell XPS 13 (l322x), the stock kernel has not booted correctly since 3.12.6-1 which booted fine. My custom kernel (single trackpad driver patch) based on that version also boots when compiled with gcc 4.8.2-6 (does not boot using 4.8.2-7). I am currently booting into that custom kernel by default and updating stock and compiling each new version myself to test but none of them boot, I just get black screen of death after gummiboot.

I have tried compiling each version of the kernel with the older version of gcc but that does not help so I doubt it is directly related to gcc (previous theory of mine).

I have tried using gummiboot (default) and tried EFISTUB directly with the same result, 3.12.6-1 boots fine, the others do not.

I also tested the slow boot theory by leaving the system with black screen over night. In the morning there was still nothing, no network connection, nothing in the journal when I booted into recovery (last entry was from the previous reboot from the working kernel) and would not respond to any keys except for the power button. Also, my my current kernel boots fine with the new version of libgcrypt, so if it is that library causing the problem it must be a serious regression in the kernel.

I have also updated the UEFI firmware from Dell, no dice obviously.

I am at the limits of my knowledge now as there are no log entries and nothing anywhere in the compile process or otherwise that gives me a clue what is going on.

Upgrading to 3.12.8-1 didn't fix it for me either. I'm working with a Lenovo x230.

This is the issue I'm facing and it required stuffing printf's into the early stages of the kernel bootstrap to debug it. That's kind of low-level kernel hackery.

It seems they're getting close to a resolution.

Pitching in with another case of this problem (why is it marked solved?) on a Lenovo T530

Booting gummi uefi and got a black screen on bootup after upgrading from 3.12.6 to 3.12.8.

Tried downgrading to 3.12.7 and that didn't help.

Failed attempts at resolution also include various kernel parameters:
nomodeset
video=SVIDEO-1:d
i915.modeset=0

Also tried early hooking i985 module.

The only thing that worked was booting from backup, chrooting, and going back to 3.12.6 via pacman -U linux-3.12.6... linux-firmware 2013...

I'm going to leave 3.12.6 kernel and firmware packages in my root directory now just in case future upgrade attempts also fail but I won't be attempting kernel upgrades as often as I used to.

I suspect that for the OP it is solved. This appears to be a bug for specific models of laptops. Each model (and possibly BIOS version) has a different memory layout so different workarounds may or may not solve it.

The bug report first cited by davehope mentions two models: Dell XPS 13 and Lenovo w520. davehope and I have Lenovo x230s that are affected. Your T530 makes a fourth known model.

This is a very low-level kernel bug. It appears that progress has stalled on it. If you have the time and technical expertise to assist, I think it would be helpful to add another data point to the bug report.

I had the same problem, a downgrade from kernel 3.12.7-2 to 3.12.6-1 solved the issue for my HP ENVY.

Same problem with 3.12.8-2 up to 3.12.9-1 in dell vostro 5460. downgrading to kernel 3.12.7-2 solves the problem.

You can add Lenovo L530 to the list of affected models.

3.12.9-2 won't boot with GummiBoot, pretty much like the whole 3.12.7+ line.

It happened also in the 3.8.x and 3.9.x days.

I use elilo as an alternative bootloader, which has worked 100% of the time when GummiBoot + EFISTUB fails.

I think the problem lies in the UEFI boot with a EFISTUB.

On my XPS13, when I boot with Legacy Boot turned on and then go to Gummiboot, it works perfectly.
Moreover, I know I read somewhere that a solution to this was using the GRUB boot loader in lieu of Gummiboot or rEFInd, both of which are boot managers.

If I had to guess, forgoing a bootloader initialization is somehow causing the system to miss whatever modules control the backlight for our hardware.

I really like the idea of booting without a boot loader, but since I need to code on my laptop for class, I guess I'm stuck using this workaround.

Hi folks, just posted to another thread but this one is more current. I have a htinkpad T440s, and just ran pacman -Syu, tried to reboot, and ran into this problem. Ouch! turning on legacy boot lets me at least boot the current arch ISO. But what is my next step? i guess I need to downgrade the kernel somehow? So far I can:

- decrypt and mount my encrypted root partition to /mnt and mount the EFI partition to /mnt/boot
- chroot into /mnt

What are my next steps? Thanks so much!

I suspect most people are using an old kernel or have switched to a different bootloader. (I've switched to syslinux.) If you are in a chroot, probably the easiest thing is to downgrade the kernel (might find one in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/) so you can reboot and then decide if you want to change bootloaders.

If you don't have an older kernel available, you can find one on the Arch Rollback Machine. The last kernel that worked for me was linux-3.12.6-1.

You'd download that package (if you have internet access in your livecd environment, you can use links or something to download it from there). Then, you'd install it with

pacman -U
