Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Isn't gnome-keyring installed when you do a sudo pacman -S / yaourt -S gnome ?!

I did pacman -Syyu gnome-shell, and it did not install gnome-keyring, that's how I got the error

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

For those you have upgraded to 3.12, is going into overview considerably slower than it was in 3.10? When I tried out 3.11.90 I was getting half the performance, I wonder if it was fixed for the release before I upgrade. Thanks.

From what I've read, one can now supposedly create folders in the programs overview.  I do not see this feature.....

You need Gnome Software for that which doesn't work on Arch anyway since the packagekit version would need to be patched for the newest pacman and Arch doesn't ship any AppStream Metadata either.

http://worldofgnome.org/gnome-software-on-arch/

You can manually create folders with dconf though; there isn't a good how-to, so I'll put something together in the wiki when I get a chance. In the meantime, here's what you do:

1. Create folder names: Open dconf and navigate to org.gnome.desktop.app-folders. For the folder-children value, put the names of your folders. For example, I put Utilities and Sundry like so:

['Utilities', 'Sundry']

Then use gsettings to set the desktop files for each app. Here is my reconstruction of the Sundry folder in Gnome 3.10 (to the best of my knowledge, anyway).

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.app-folders.folder:/org/gnome/desktop/app-folders/folders/Sundry/ apps "['alacarte.desktop', 'dconf-editor.desktop', 'file-roller.desktop', 'gnome-network-panel.desktop', 'gnome-power-statistics.desktop', 'gnome-sound-recorder.desktop', 'itweb-settings.desktop', 'javaws.desktop', 'orca.desktop', 'vinagre.desktop', 'gnome-control-center.desktop', 'nm-applet.desktop', 'nm-connection-editor.desktop']"

Note that the actual name of the folder does not show up in the shell. However, it does get all of those "useless" apps sorted and out of my way while still being accessible within the shell. So I'm happy smile Again, I will write up things more clearly on the wiki when I have some time (tonight probably).

Thanks for that. A question: where is the config from the gsettings command stored in case I want to edit it later?

It seems slightly more sluggish for me. I think it's somehow related to extensions and icon theme as I noticed an improvement when switching to the stock GNOME icon theme and disabling all extensions. I have a lot of those enabled, and some of them have been acting up since the update. I normally just get the extensions from extensions.gnome.org. Do they get automatically updated this way or would it be a better idea to get them from the AUR?

If you have them from extensions.gnome.org you can click "update", when you switch to Gnome 3.12 in the tweak-tool. It will try to reinstall them from the website if they have been updated to be compatible. I fixed one myself by just editing its metadata.json in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

After extensive testing I found out that the i686 pkg for Epiphany is a dupe/broken one and needs to be remade. The x86_64 pkg is the real one for both archtectures.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

All packages should be done now. These packages are still remaining:

## CORE
core:gnome-packagekit:3.12.0:

## APPS
apps:gitg:0.3.2:
apps:gnome-boxes:3.12.0:
apps:gnome-initial-setup:3.12.0:
apps:gnome-software:3.12.0:
apps:gnome-sound-recorder:3.12.0:
apps:nemiver:0.9.5:

Some of these are in community, some of these are packages that we don't have in any repository yet. I won't be doing the packagekit stuff, as packagekit doesn't support archlinux.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Great work JGC!

It's look like there are only a few packages remaining. smile

I have an question about gnome-software: what is the status about it and how does it work?
Is it correct that gnome-software needs to be build separated? Is it like building a new pacman(-GUI) wrapper?

I'd thought it would just be a database (maintain by Gnome/Community) and the distro just linked towards the package(s).

They show up in dconf; org.gnome.desktop.app-folders.folders has the folders you've entered. You can further edit them from there. Basically you're just editing the settings in two different ways; I just had trouble adding keys directly from dconf!

EDIT: I added a somewhat clearer walkthrough with some additional info here. Namely, I went through actually giving app-folders names, and sorting by category (and excluding certain apps from inclusion by category!).

Everything works in gnome-unstable, except gdm... For now I am using lightdm as a replacement, but here are some errors I've pulled from various logs:

No, just "New terminal" and Ctrl+N mean open a new terminal window, and Ctrl+T (tab) means new tab.

Are you sure?

There is no "New Tab" option in the File menu, and Ctrl + T does not open a new tab for me.

EDIT: After looking at the shortcut keys, Shift+ Ctrl + T for a new tab, and Shift + Ctrl + N for a new window. neutral

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I may have found a bug with Nautilus. Whenever I select a network share in Nautilus' side pane, it takes me to the home directory of the user I logged in as instead of taking me to the directory I told it to mount in the "Connect to Server" dialog.

Can anyone else reproduce this behavior?

Yeah thats weird, because when I moved the gnome-unstable repo above the core repo, it installed glib2 and gdm started working again

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Your gdm issue is a crashing X server. Probably a bug in fglrx, not gdm.

As for gnome-terminal... it needs a utf8 locale, C locale won't work anymore.

Anyone else no longer have the gnome-session-properties command/desktop file? I know I can just edit the contents of ~/.config/autostart and /etc/xdg/autostart but I kind of liked this tool. Has it changed names?
