And what are those odd results?  Are they the 'odd results' of the directories being renamed so it can't proceed through all the files?  If so, this was addressed by Xyne in post 6.

If you just want to blame Bash, feel free.  But it seems to me the problem is that you are not really implementing the suggested solutions.

Bash is perfectly capable of this.  Of course Python or C could do it too.  But none of these tools/languages will do it properly if you do not give them a logical set of instructions: crap in, crap out, regardless of the language.
