Nothing funky at all, I have a /boot partition and a / partition, both are ext4. This is a completely vanilla setup right now, only enough packages to get ssh going and vim.

I had some free time this afternoon, so I hopped on the very friendly #archlinux irc channel and they were able to help me out. using :
ls -ld /gave us some wrong permissions, so we used
chmod 755 /to get it back to normal. Still not sure why it was like that, but its working now. Thank you all.
