Re: Problem installing Radeon Driver

My laptop uses the same card ("05:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265]")

Since the arch kernel isn't compiled with CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_CIK, that would mean that AMDGPU wouldn't attempt to initialise the GPU if it were a pre-tonga card (correct me if I'm wrong).

However, booting on 4.2 produces the following output in dmesg:

Additionally, RadeonFeature also seems to suggest that Topaz is a card of the same generation as Tonga (i.e. GCN 1.2), and the table above that explicitly refers to Topaz as Volcanic Islands. Hence, I'm reasonably confident that this GPU *should* work under amdgpu.

I know that many Radeon owners have high hopes, but let's be realistic: it's a new driver and it needs time. Without reclocking support, amdgpu is atm just as usable as nouveau for modern Nvidia cards. Catalyst will remain the only real option for some time longer, hopefully not too long.

If you aren't going to play games or use 3D modeling software you should consider not using your dedicated GPU at all. That's what I did, I don't need it for Linux. Everything is running smoothly with Intel HD, less heat, battery lasts longer.

If you want to do that, you will need to uninstall any driver you install for this gpu and you could blacklist radeon module.

I am not PRO user, so i can't test it as it should be tested. But it works.

But i cant run steam games. HL2 and Metro2033. Output:

So, I compiled, installed amdgpu, restarted and booted on the new kernel. xrandr --listproviders lists the amd chip :

$ xrandr --listproviders

Unfortunately, that's all I can get.

So, it seems to work, I can get glxgears to work with the amdgpu card (I have to resize the window or all I get is a black window). Is there a way to use the AMD chip for everything (desktop, video, games etc.) and completely turn off the Intel IGP ?

After running a few tests, I can say that performance is not as good as with the Intel IGP... That's kind of disappointing but hey, at least the chip works at last !
