I'd like to see some of the money go into an AMD64 machine for Judd so we can have the original arch developer hacking on the next generation Arch64.
Dusty
I agree with that... The project definitely needs a boost, especially if its from the creator of Arch

I'd love to see some of that extra money go towards Arch64, but as always... the dev's get to decide where the funds go

If Judd really thinks that a 64-bit machine would be of assistance, I say go for it! Well, that is if the current budget allows.
Also, when I get paid (poor college student) I'll drop some green the way of Arch!

This would take a little time, but maybe a generic form letter could be sent to everyone that donated after %100 asking what they would like their donations to be used for.
I think it should look something like this.
1: beer
2: cigars
3: amd 64 machine
4: save it for the next server upgrade

buy yourself a sparkling new 64 bit processor, friend, you deserve it. Anybody here dare to disagree?
I dare to disagree! He shouldn't go out and buy a 64-bit processor with this money... he'll need a motherboard and RAM to go with that. *nod*

Do I get bad juju for being unable to donate? I'm there in spirit, but financially strapped. Congrats to those who can and did donate.

+1 For Judd buying and AMD64 setup!

Well if it doesn't get all spent, I like the idea of saving for the next server upgrade. Maybe invest some of it with a low risk option and make some more money?

an ING Direct CD would be a really simple guaranteed way to have it grow at about 5%.... no fees... no minimums....

I will not cut back my donation in telling the recievers what they should do with it. They will do something useful, I have no doubt. They have fixed costs and for sure some archlinux related charges to pay here and then. They should take the money and go ahead, found an archlinux foundation, take a bath, whatever .

in no way was i attempting to tell the Devs what to do
We're just stoked there's some extra money for arch that's all...

Take a bath? The moment one of the devs take a bath, I'm leaving :x I only started using Arch because I heard Arch users and devs are like minded...uh...I still take a bath...annually...

I'm in total agreement with Moo-Crumpus on the donation issue and feel quite certain that Judd will act intelligently and responsibily with the many generous donations received. End of story...

I'd donate but I have (more like my wife has) a baby due March 13.

I think when people donate for new servers; it should be spend on new servers; and not on other hardware / stuff
Offline
Seeing as we've passed the goal a long while now, it's safe to assume that people are no longer donating for new servers

Perhaps we should finish the server donation drive and start a 'Hardware required by developers to improve driver support (eg ATI card for Iphitus)'-donation drive now.

Surely with $6000 in the bank it's safe to assume that there's the money for a fairly robust server and probably a decent development machine too?
I know that if I had 6 grand I could get my hands of a kick-ass server (a Dell PowerEdge 1850 is $5000, and I would guess the Arch admins have something better and cheaper up their sleves?) and have some left for developement hardware - as long as a decent (no, better than decent!) server appears I guess most people wouldn't really care what the rest of the cash goes on.

Exactly.. and i think if you trust judd and the devs to run your distro, trust them with a little money.
I personally donated for beer and cigars, but whatever floats your boat. either way arch is going to get the needed server and we can keep using this kickass distro.

Actually it is enough money to buy a server and a mature server OS. */me runs away and hides*

Hey, where did the donation link and graphic showing the progress go?
I just did a transfer from my bank to paypal so I can send in my share once that clears. But when I checked back here the stuff was gone.
Guess I'll go to the donations link and do it there. Still, would be nice to know how the drive is going for a while more yet. It hasn't even been a full week . . . .
Offline
It was probably removed because the goal was reached. 245% of the money needed for the new server was accumulated so it didn't make sense to keep it there longer.
There's still the paypal button at the bottom of the page if you want to donate. I'm sure Judd will appreciate any additionnal donations.
