My recommendation would be to stick to a stable release of KDE. You could possibly achieve that in Arch by holding back the KDE packages. From what I know, open source developers are largely people like you and me with full time jobs. Also, keep in mind that the people trying to port application to Windows might not be the same ones that work on improving the Linux version.

Yeah, it was just a one day hissy fit on my part. Plasma 5 is going thru the same stuff KDE4 went thru. Everything broken, house in shambles, water in the cellar, squirrels in the attic and 'why can't we keep KDE3?'

Plasma 5 is much more stable today than what it was a month ago. I'm currently on my second week of my monthly test. I think I'll stay a while now. I can handle the little things that don't work.

Re: KDE 5 replacing KDE 4?

Great masolit.
Any chance to provide source pkgbuilds too?
Your repo provides binaries for 64bit only, i understand that, but with them we would be able to build 32bit versions too by our own.

Re: KDE 5 replacing KDE 4?

I'm facing the same basic frustrations. I installed Arch and KDE on my main PC just before the huge push to QT5, Plasma5, and the rest of the bizarre nature of KDE5 started happening, and I've resisted it as much as I can. I chose Arch to be closer to understanding Linux without the... insanity that seems to be Gentoo (sorry if that offends anyone, but Arch is just quicker to get on it's feet from a post-install perspective). I know Arch is bleeding edge, but that doesn't mean I have to locked into something I don't want. That's kind of the point of Arch - what I want. Every time I've replaced kdebase-workspace with plasma, I've regretted it and gone back. I've invested time and effort into plasma4, and making the change for change's sake is annoying sometimes.

That said, tonight I'll give plasma another shot but honestly, I'll probably be reinstalling kdebase-workspace before I go to bed.

Re: KDE 5 replacing KDE 4?

Arch is "what you want", but it's the LATEST versions of what you want. So KDE is always the upstream release, Gnome is the upstream release, etc. It's exactly the same in other worlds too -- you lose support if you don't upgrade OSX or Windows.

I feel for those that are frustrated, but running a rolling release and then complaining about it "rolling" doesn't make sense.
