You didn't say which model of Samsung laser printer you have - you could try to find more info about linux support for your particular device at...

The printer is a Samsung CLP315W. One comment in that site for open source drivers seems to imply they don't work properly, but I'll give them a shot. Does anyone have any feedback on how well the samsung drivers usually work?

it was the driver. switched to the splix driver and now it's printing fine. probably should have just tried that from the get-go. thanks for the help
