Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

Hi Mikos

I am running this on my laptop with an Ati Radeon Mobility 9700 with the 8.23.7 ati fglrx drivers. Am using kernel 2.6.16-beyond1 and i compiled the ati drivers based on the ati-fglrx-archck files in abs.

I am going to release new version of my PKGBULDs in few minutes... I have done changes 3 hours ago, but I didn't have time to test it.

Do you think this is a graphic card specific problem? I am running Xgl right now without problems with:
cairo-cvs-20060406-1.pkg.tar.gz   glproto-cvs-20060404-1.pkg.tar.gz
compiz-cvs-20060406-1.pkg.tar.gz  mesa-cvs-20060404-1.pkg.tar.gz
glitz-cvs-20060404-1.pkg.tar.gz   xgl-cvs-20060404-1.pkg.tar.gz

I am right now back home and do not have access to my PC with my HIS Ati radeon 9800Pro. So I cant test if i get the same problem with another graphics card. I do not know the make of the Ati mobility radeon 9700 as it came with my laptop.

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

eddy: I don't understand you clearly... well, if older version of Xgl & Compiz is running on your computer without problems, then this is not not graphic card specific problem and it should work.

But some Ati Radeon Mobility cards definitely have problems with Xgl & Compiz. Look at XGL HOWTO on Gentoo wiki, there is huge hardware list (you will find link in my first topic of this thread).

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

!!! UPDATE !!!
You can download new version of my Xgl & Compiz PKGBUILDs here:
xgl-abs-overlay-20060410-1.tar.gz

Or as usual you can checkout it directly from my bazaar-ng repository (use instructions in topic of this thread).

Btw. you must manually remove mesa-cvs before installing packages created from my latest PKGBUILDs (with pacman -Rd mesa-cvs)!

Changelog:

· Removed misplaced exa.h and randrstr.h files from xgl-cvs
· Added mesa-tfp-update-1.patch to xgl-cvs and mesa-cvs
· Added compiz-intel-copy-pixel-issue-workaround-1.diff patch to compiz-cvs and compiz-quinn-cvs
· Mesa-cvs renamed to mesa-xgl-cvs (for better compatibility with forthcomming AIGLX pkgbuilds)

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

There might be some changes in the new Xgl/compiz/mesa/glitz/cairo/glproto version you have posted a PKGBUILD for, that have been made that require changes to my current setup.  I really dont mind not upgrading to the new version of Xgl because the one i have works perfectly. This is why i dont believe that there is a problem with compatibility whatsoever with my mobility radeon as i have been running Xgl since about a month and have gone through upgrade procedures quite a few times and Xgl worked every time (without too much trouble). Just proposing proposals as "thought starters". I will find a way to get it to work on a similar system to mine, and let people know. Just posted this in case someone had the same problem and had a fix, which would have saved me a lot of time and frustration (no X properly set up...).

Thx

QuinnStorm is girl who is maintaining her own Compiz CVS repository with additional patches and plugins included. Look at http://compiz.ed3n.com and http://compiz.blogspot.com for more informations.

eddy: Sorry, I don't know how to help you :-( Have you tried to run Xgl without Compiz (simply comment out compiz and gnome-window-decorator lines in startxgl script)? And have you tried also clear compiz-cvs, or only compiz-quinn-cvs?

Why is it, that the Xfce4-svn pager is so small? I am really force to use my keyboard to switch desktop, which can be a little bit annoying in Xfce4.

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

Hi there
I have removed compiz from my startxgl script and this does not make a difference. I have then installed each of the 6 packages one after each other and found that the only package upgrade that breaks my Xgl is the new xgl-cvs. If i keep my previous xgl-cvs and upgrade the other 5 packages the previously described error does not occur. Once upgrading xgl-cvs, the error occurs. Compiz-cvs and compiz-quinn-cvs both work. I will keep searching in the direction of xgl-cvs being my problem.
cheers

you have to install different gtk themes.
I think that you can install qtcurve and select it with gtk-chtheme so your gtk apps will have gtk colors of your qt apps

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

Hi!
First of all, thanks to Mikos for maintaining the PKGBUILDs allowing us to use the newest features from cvs!
For those of you that get errors like Can't open display, I may have found a solution. I also had that problem after upgrading my PKGBUILDs to Mikos' bzr repo. I got a little suspicous and decided to go through the startup procedure as in the startxgl script, typing the commands by hand, switching between VT 1 and 7 to see what's going on. It turned out that, at least on my system, Xgl needs a while to get started before you can successfully load compiz and other stuff. I had already made a custom startxgl script so i don't have to specify parameters everytime, and what made it work was to add a longer delay between starting Xgl and Compiz. For me, a

sleep 12

did the trick, however if you're on a slower system you may need to adjust it accordingly. Try to modify your /usr/bin/startxgl to something like this:

(...)
Xgl :$xgldisplay -ac -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer &
fi

sleep 12
msg "Starting Compiz (window and composite manager)"
(...)

Regards, rasta

xwinwrap -ni -argb -fs -s -st -sp -b -nf -- /usr/libexec/xscreensaver/glmatrix -window-id WID -delay 10000

If you want terminal emulator with native support for real transparency, install rxvt-unicode and run it with these options:

urxvt -depth 32 -bg rgba:0000/0000/0000/cccc

First of all. Why don't I have xwinwrap even though I have xscreensaver installed.

And second. How do I put urxvt options in .Xdefaults? I have set it up like this:

Re: Latest Xgl and Compiz PKGBUILDs

whargoul: xwinwrap is not part of xscreensaver. It is separate tool to run apps with a non-default X visual. You can build and install it from my PKGBUILDs (or I think also from Shadowhand's repository).

And I don't know how to put these urxvt options for real transparency to .Xdefaults (I don't want to have it there forever). But if you look at section RESOURCES of man urxvt, I am sure you will find it.
