I installed kernel 4.6-RC2 but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. Maybe this isn't a gpu hang.

Try recompiling with this patch

For the multi-touch regression on kernel 4.5 I've found some related bug reports/threads: hopping in a fix soon....

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

What is the USB-C patch for? Havent used USBC yet. Is it upstream already?
Same for the i915 patch, is that a bugfix or an enhacement?

BTW I added the hack for the touchscreen:

vi /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/99touchscreen

[ "$1" = "post" ] && modprobe -r hid_multitouch && sleep 3 && modprobe hid_multitouch

It's very hacky, I don't understand what's the issue with that driver, but anyway....

Thanks for your input guys, very valuable!

The i915 patch is suposedly a buggfix that should resolve gpu hangs from what i can understand.

The patch i'm refering to is in my signature below.

Cheers!

Hi Ksim,  great links.  I just got the WD15 dock.  Is this the reason you've patched both above?  What use case did you need to patch for?  Just out of curiousity.  I'm having difficulties getting the dock to work.  Just doing the research now.  Wondering if you were in the same boat.  Your comments always welcome. smile

Edit: nvm, I found this bug report https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115931 looks like it won't be supported yet sad

this is patch for hotplug USB-C devices, if you connect an USB-C device (I have my phone connected for example), it is not visible without PCI rescan, also sleep and shutodwn do not work after a device is connected.

davidgf wrote:

this is patch set for frame buffer compression support, allows to save about 1W in idle, expected in 4.7, but still has issues.

I do not have a dock, just to connect my phone without messing the system behaviour with sleep and shutdown.

Are you saying that all functions of the dock work? I've been reading nothing but bad reviews (even for use with windows) and although I am really keen to buy this and two Dell Ultrasharp's, I almost gave up on the thought. Can you tell us more about your experience with the dock? Thanks!

I was disheartened about the bad reviews and how it would be difficult to work under windows and nobody having success on linux.  I don't have the ultrasharps nor a 4k monitor.  The wd15 comes with vga port and hdmi port.  My monitors are hdmi or dvi.  So at this moment I can only test with one monitor until I get an adapter.  All usb ports working.  Power works.  Suspend/power button works.  What more can I talk about?  I'm quite happy I took the plunge.

I removed my windows desktop pc at work and now have the dock with this laptop.  Which is great because now all my work related stuff can be on one computer which is handy when I'm away overseas etc.

Edit: headphone plug into dock is not detected.

There was nothing but bad reviews.  I knew thunderbolt 3 is quite new and would be buggy during the first couple years.

Thanks for the reply! Sounds great. In doubt between the WD15 and the TB15.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

I was getting the flickering bug when I ran 4.6-rc2 did anyone get the same?  I've since included this patch https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/66697/  and just booted into it.  No flicker so far but I'll have to give it a day.

@ksim, the link for the fbc patch you put in #429 doesn't contain the actual patch.  (or I'm just blind).  Do you have another link?  What problems were you experiencing with that particular patch?

edit: fixed kernel rc #
edit2: The flicker still exists... ugh

@sender, it depends on the use case.  I won't be getting 4k monitors anytime soon so I went with the wd15 as it can do 1 4k monitor or 2 regular.  TB15 can do 2 4k.  Might be more differences but this will do for me.  Basically the dock is just for convenience so I don't have to look stupid plugging everything in and carrying the power cord with me to work.  *cool factor*

edit3: my mistake earlier.  WD15 dock is NOT thunderbolt 3.  The TB15 dock is.  Oops, didn't mean to confuse anyone.

As a matter of fact i was just sitting and reading through the diffs for 4.3-rc3

The usb-c patch that has been discussed earlier as well as most of the gpu patches i've seen floating around is not included from what i can see.

I'm currently compiling 4.6-rc3 with the following:

Add Skylake GCC optimization:
https://github.com/graysky2/kernel_gcc_patch

USB-C Patch:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115121

iGpu related patches:

I will revert back to you with results within the hour

Well, atleast nothing broke is the initial response smile..

Something is different though.. I had weird random graphics glitches when typing on the keayboard sometimes with above patchset that seem to have disapeared in 4.6-rc3

Touch screen stopping to work after resume is still persistent. I have posted link to a solution for that earlier as well as a oneliner solution has been presented.

Cool Roffe, I'll have to add the ones I'm missing.  Thanks for the links.  Spending time with fam today so I'll patch tonight and see how the flickering goes.  Did you do anything else?  Perhaps in a xorg conf for disabling dri or switching to uxa?  Kernel params?

this patchset (see the full thread) is for 4.6, which is not stable yet, I have issues with kernel panic and gpu hung, few issues with intel wifi (hung sometimes), currently I am using 4.5 with the USB-C patch with disabled fbc as a stable config. Battery is good, about the same as in windows.

A day later.

I 've had no gpu hangs. I play 4k videon's from youtube & my daily work is not hindered by any bugs.

Battery time seems a little bad so i have to investigate that further.

Frank: No kernel params or special xorg.conf
