Well, this is not ambient light sensor related.
This behavior is probably managed by your desktop manager.
Which one are you using ?

btw, it's not an Ambient Light Sensor, it's Content Adaptive Backlight, and it's builtin into the display firmware, no fix on sight apparently https://github.com/advancingu/XPS13Linu … -100466492

Please kindly note: fix is suitable only for QHD displays because FHD has a locked firmware management.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Hey guys, how did you managed to get power down so much!?

I'm using zetxx's TLP config file in github, but I'm getting around 6.8Watts

Is there any other thing I can try? I think I'm good with GPU/DMC firmware so I have no idea what else to try.

Thanks!

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

I have the FHD model (please always specify) , during the day the brightness is between 30 to 50 % (xcalib -co 70 -a) .

I use OpenBox and tint2. My system use between 3.9 to 6 Watts with Chromium and some tabs,Geany, WiFi streaming HEVC/H.265 video and play it with mpv (hardware accelerate).

I am using the last bios without any trouble.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

After struggling to get Windows installed just to run the CABC disabler, I can confirm (as the rest of the people in github) it works!

Maybe it's important to note that you need the Intel driver installed in windows for the program to run, else it won't be able to write the firmware.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Hey can you explain a bit how this automatic brightness thing works? I mean, I haven't noticed it I think, so I'm a bit curious about it...
It might be cool to try to reproduce it and see how is actually disabled, but I guess if it goes through the driver it will be hard to trace and create a driver for it on linux.

In https://github.com/advancingu/XPS13Linux/issues/2 there is a huge history about the problem, including a website you can use to test it and a video showing it, and also the fix:

http://tylerwatt12.com/dc/
https://vid.me/8Ger

the fix is permanent, so you login in windows, execute the program, and the display will never do that again, unless you reverse it, the executables for enabling/disabling the CABC are there.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Hi guys, I'm trying to install 4.4-rc* on my XPS 9350 256GB FHD but I have a big problem: when I select any 4.4-rc* kernel on grub i receive a black window on boot.
I googled a lot and I tried various fix but I can't figure out how can I debug the situation because I don't have any message on the screen (I tried to close the monitor, ctrl+alt+t, ctrl+f1..).
I think that is related to the video driver, do you have any ideas? sad

try to add nvme module to your modules in mkinitcpio.conf .

Thank you ksim, i tried to add nvme and i915 module to "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules" and "sudo update-initramfs -u -k all" but unfortunately the problem is still there sad
Is this the same?

looks like you are using Ubuntu/debian, do you have i915 firmware files in your initramfs?

Yes, sorry for the inaccuracy, i'm on Ubuntu 15.10 and I added i915 in "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules".
On kernel.log I see this error:  i915 0000:00:02.0: registered panic notifier

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Did you upgrade your BIOS to 1.1.7? I've been getting a black screen on most boots since I upgraded that. Booting only works 1 time out of 3 roughly.

I tried posting in the Dell Support Forums concerning the NVME problems with the battery life in Linux but no answer.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

@friimaind Your issue is more linked to Grub/Ubuntu/Debian boot configuration and how you compile the kernel that Archlinux and the XPS13.  You should try the Ubuntu forum.Specify the rc that you are trying to use.
