Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

successfully disabled "Content Adaptive Backlight" after 1.5 days struggling with windows 8.1 to go... dont use W8 for "to go", use only/at least 10 because 8.1 are not supporting our hardware, also use rufus tool - easiest way

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Okay, I'm on a QHD model. I seem to have most things working. However, I have a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter I am trying to use with it. It doesn't seem to be working at all. Here is the output from lshw:

Any ideas on how to get this working? Or at least something I might be able to try?

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

What is the model of the adapter? Is it in the list of compatible and supported devices of the kernel?  Do it work on other USB c Linux device?

What is the output of xrandr with the adapter connected?

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

It appears to be a VisionTek VT 900817. I do not have access to any other machines that have Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C to test it with.

The output from xrandr is exactly the same with the device connected as it is disconnected.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you see it in the output of lsusb?

If I'm correct, I don't think it is supported by the kernel. Too recent, it is not linked to the port of the XPS13.

I will get the adapter of the chromebook Pixel in a few week. Since it is working on chrome os it should work on any Linux.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

I booted into Ubuntu 15.10 via live USB and the adapter worked. That indicates that it should work if I can just figure out what drivers and settings it needs.

yes, I noticed, sadly I removed all traces of windows and also have a LUKS full disk encryption with LVM inside, I don't think that plays too well with resizing, I'll try to install Windows 10 on an external drive and test, I'll post my findings here.

then let me know did you managed to install  it

I used http://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/index.html to create the Windows To Go drive, note that you need to install the intel graphics driver before running the firmware updater.

Any ideas on how to get this working? Or at least something I might be able to try?

I'm using a USB-C to HDMI and worked without having to do anything, I think every connector should work like that, I'm running a 4K display on 30hz, I'm waiting on a USB-C to HDMI-2.0 to test it in 60hz

What adapter do you have? I bought a Cable Matters one from Amazon, but I get garbled colors in my Samsung TV. Audio works though, which is weird.

edit: Just tested on a different display (Dell U2211H) and it works fine. If anyone is looking for an USB-C -> HDMI adapter this is the one I have.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

I've got a 9350 here running 4.4.0-1-drm-intel-nightly (which I built on 15 December). I am unable to get any sound to come out of the internal speakers, even though headphones are working alright. "Speaker" control in alsamixer is unmuted and set to 100%.

Anybody else have the same issue, or is this just my machine?

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Hi guys,

Just built 4.4-rc6 and on reboot two new USB devices including a USB Video over uvcvideo. This probably means the USB-C port will finally work for me. I encourage people to test it out. Power usage however is still not amazing.

EDIT: No... Just new drivers for the Webcam. My Nexus 6P still only gets power from the USB-C port and is not recognised as a USB device. sad

Sorry guys for the stupid question: how did you installed arch without wifi? I don't have any dongle/sharing devices and I have a broadcom chipset.

you can use your phone to share the wifi through usb networking if you don't have any dongles, I used a usb network adapter

Thank you, I will try with my Nexus 5 and, just to be sure, this evening I'm going to buy a simple dongle wifi.
Do you have some tips for a newbie like me to enable it on install? Does it automatically recognized?

First, look at the output of ip link   ; it will show you the names of all of the network interfaces available.  When you enable USB tethering on the phone, you should see a new device appear in the output of that command.  Once it appears, just run, as root, dhcpcd.  Your system will grab an address from your phone and you are good to go.

Unless you are with a user hostile cell carrier, the phone should provide NAT forwarding from whatever network it is attached to -- either wifi or LTE/G4/G3/G2.  But be careful, some carriers *cough*T-Mobile*cough* thought it a good idea to force you onto their LTE network when you enable sharing.  So, even if you had a wifi connection, their phone will drop the wifi and connect to the LTE network when you tether.  I have no idea why they think that a good idea or what the business case is.  Anyway, the point is, be careful that you don't blow through any data caps thinking you are attached to a wifi network.  I permanently fixed this problem on my phone by installing Cyanogenmod in place of my carrier's Android firmware.

Thank you so much ewaller for a very clear answer smile
I will check my IP address of XPS when I'm in tethering to see if I'm on the DSL's house or on UMTS (unfortunately LTE is not so popular here in Italy sad ).

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

For those still wrangling with the content adaptive brightness control issues, Anandtech just posted that Dell is issuing a patch of some kind that allows you to disable it more easily. The article doesn't indicate which exact models are supported or what exactly the patch does, and states that you have to contact Dell Support to receive it. Assuming this is for the late 2015 model and might allow fully disabling CABC on the FHD model at the BIOS level this could be helpful.

I plan on getting an FHD model next week while on vacation, and CABC sounds like something I'd want to remove. If anyone tries to get this from Dell please post how it goes.

Re: Dell XPS 13 9350 Late 2015

Help me guys sad

Do I need to add i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 to kernel on first install boot? Because I can't install sad
This is the situation:

I reached the step "pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel" and the result is:
- with the parameter the xps freeze with an error "watchdog detected hard lockup on cpu 1" or another error "659.266191 panic double fault error_code 0x0"
- without the parameter the xps freeze on downloading packages (no matter what package)

I really don't know what to do, my bios is the latest with:
- secureboot disabled
- sata with ahci
- fastbook to thorough

First, if you are using Windows to create the USB stick, I recommend using Win32 Disk Imager. I found it more reliable for the Arch image in particular. Then make sure you disable USB boot protection in the BIOS, it can interfere with the UEFI boot. Don't opt for Legacy boot, it's no good. Then if you are running kernel 4.2 or 4.3, you need to enable i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 only when you create your boot config after install. You don't need it for installation. If you are staying with the Broadcom WiFi, I suggest you download the packages mentioned in the Wiki to the USB or better yet to a separate USB so you can install them in place with pacman -U. Then once you have wifi working make sure you format your boot partition and root partition properly following the GPT partitioning in the Beginners' Guide. then make sure you mount the root partition in /mnt and only after that the boot partition to /mnt/boot. If those are not correct, pacstrap will not work properly. If all those are done fine, it should work. If it still doesn't work, then you might have a more serious issue.

Hi kgizdov,
I created the usb stick with DD using my iMac.
I didn't know that there was an option "usb boot protection", I will see thank you.
Thanks to ewaller I managed to tethering usb with my Nexus 5 and internet connection worked fine.

Just for the record: I managed to install Fedora 23 without problems and I'm using since yesterday with Kernel 4.4rc6 without a single problem.
I'm 100% sure that I missed something on install/configuration instead of an hardware problem.

PS: When the XPS freezed the caps lock started to blinking

Hey, sorry to be a bother about this, but can anybody just let me know if the speakers on their 9350 are working? Can't get any sound to come out of mine, don't know whether it's Linux or whether I have a defective machine.
