edited the typo-- systemd-boot worked!!!!

Woot! *celebratory dance* big_smile

what conf files do I have to change so it doesn't try to boot /dev/sda2/boot ?

None whatsoever.

One of the benefits of using systemd-boot is that it handles the ESP intelligently, including automatic on-demand mounting and automatic un-mounting after a set period of inactivity.

Thank you so much!!

two last questions --
so now I don't have to worry about pacman upgrades?
also, my USB iso doesn't show up on systemd-boot, how can I get it to?

Seriously, thank you. I can work again! /half-hearted-woop

I don't think so but you can check that /boot is mounted to the ESP before you Syu if you're feeling paranoid.

EDIT: Because of systemd's automatic un-mounting, you may have to `ls /boot` as root to get it to re-mount before using pacman.

I always use my firmware ("BIOS") boot menu to load USB sticks & CD/DVDs -- do you have such an option?

At this point you might remove all other boot loaders.
In case you want to boot ubuntu, you may add one more entry to systemd-boot. Unless it is already detected.
BTW [Solved] ? wink

do it good first, it will be faster than do it twice the saint wink

Yes, I have the firmware menu, I was just confused why it showed up in rEFInd but not systemd-boot.
re: auto unmount, I was reading https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/1378 .. given my limited understanding, they fixed the issue last September? I'll ls /boot anyway just in case.

THANK YOU so much Head_on_a_Stick, tom.ty89, TheSaint, ewaller! You really saved me. I def would not have been able to fix this without you.

[Solved] sounds good. Recommendations as to how I can give back?
