Compromised?? how?
By compromised I mean an unknown party gaining access to system via ssh either using a documented weakness in sshd or by a brute force attack if you allowed password based logins.
As you are going to replace the system that should minimize the potential risk.
Would just advise against reusing any passwords or key pairs that were used or stored on that system and have the VPS provider create you a fresh install unconnected to the existing one.
On the fresh install use key based authentication only if you do not already see Secure_Shell#Force_public_key_authentication
