[Solved] Catalyst to AMDGPU issues

Hello,

My GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 6670, I've been running Catalyst for a while but would like really like to use more updated software. I've fully uninstalled all packages from Catalyst, removed nomodeset from kernel boot parameters, enabled early KMS and followed the guide exactly: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU

The X server still does not start, due to it having issues finding devices? The GPU maybe? I'm fairly stuck here and was just wondering if anybody could give some extra insight with this error message:

Re: [Solved] Catalyst to AMDGPU issues

If I recall correctly AMDGPU requires a GCN card, Graphics Core Next.  And a 6670 definitely isn't one.

Re: [Solved] Catalyst to AMDGPU issues

Oh wow thank you, I was looking around for a while to see the cards it supported. I only came up with this, which showed my card: http://askubuntu.com/questions/756258/w … untu-16-04

That sucks, I'd really have liked to move off Catalyst. Thanks again.

Re: [Solved] Catalyst to AMDGPU issues

The 6000 series and some of the 7 are now "legacy" cards by AMD status.  They won't be getting any more work from AMD done for them.  Yeah.  xf86-video-ati though is still under active development and supports the 6000 series very well - I used to have a 6870 with it and recently upgraded to a R9 380.  You're welcome.

These lines indicate you have one or more *.conf files for X.

If you removed them, X autodetection would have seen you don't have an amdgpu supported card and tried to use xf86-video-ati instead.

remove all *.conf files from /etc/X11/  & /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folders, install xf86-video-ati and try again.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Thanks, I switched to xf86-video-ati after @headkase recommended it to me and has been working well. Sadly it does not perform as well as Catalyst, but I've seen no version of Catalyst which supports both my GPU and Linux 4.7. I assume there is none, I'll just go ahead and mark this thread as solved since I've settled for a driver.
