The pkgbuild is a little messy and since makepkg uses fakeroot.. make thinks its root so it wants to use a tmp folder inside /root so you need to run makepkg or aurbuild as root
I think you need to use a MONO_SHARED_DIR directory to get it to build as a regular user. See the f-spot PKGBUILD for details.

okay.. liferea seems like a much better replacement after all.. its fast in development.. doesnt need lots of libs.. looks nice.. and stable
PS: however this is for gnome users since it doesnt need some gnome libs (which is what i meant when i said doesnt need a lot.. )
UPDATE: RSSOwl (in AUR) is written in java and i looked at the s-shots and they look very nice (gtk-type-of-gui).. so if you need a gtk/java rss reader.. try rssowl
