Re: June 2006 screenshots

Openbox seems to be very very popular, but why can't I see what you guys love about it?  Am I missing some essential piece?  Shadowhand's ob screenshot is hot though... smile

Best answer is to just try it. I used to say the same about Fluxbox. smile

It's small, functional, unobtrusive, beautiful, and incredibly fast.

owned. but what does openbox really have that makes it so great, what killer features set it apart from the rest?

Thanks! smile

I love openbox because it's elegant. It's easy to set up, easy to change keybinds, and is really small and fast. I don't like the Flux "slit", and I don't like Flux's menu system. Openbox is "just" a window manager, but it's a very good one.

Re: June 2006 screenshots

Openbox doesn't have any killer features. I like that it's very standards compliant, so you can use *any* additional tools like taskbars, window matching utilities, and so on, it integrates well with Gnome and KDE (but I don't care about these), the configuration files are XML but easy to edit with a text editor (everything is very well structured and named). The default themes are few but all good (Fluxbox for example comes with a shitload of themes and 99% of them are crap). There is the graphical "obconf" for fast theme switching/preview (and setting some of the elemental functions). And it never crashes or misbehaves.

Umm... What thingy? Openbox fits that profile, just look at the screenshots, the package size, the memory footprint, the window-switching menu, the way it can integrate with DEs, the redraw times for window decorations, etc. It's not a perfect window manager of course, but it's a damn good window manager.

It's terminal-svn from xfce-svn. Any app can run in OB without borders (there's a command called "Decorate" in OB which removes the titlebar)

Re: June 2006 screenshots

Hi,
Here is my current desktop, using openbov-devel, adesklets and an openbox theme by Aer (openbox implementation of the Rezlooks-Chlorophyll gtk-2.0 theme).

OK, so not as impressive as some (read: as most) of the screenshots, but I like it. I have done so subtle tweaks to the default theme, so its not completely standard. Background picture courtesy of rezza.
