GRUB: error: no symbol table

On an arch(EFI) virtual guest machine I am getting some errors (the system boots normally though).

First error is possibly nothing: just the virtual cd/dvd drive not having anything mounted

Boot Failed. EFI DVD/CDROM
Welcome to GRUB!

Then I get the GRUB menu and after that I get the following screen:

  Booting 'Arch Linux'

error: no symbol table.
Loading Linux linux ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

Press any key to continue...

The system then boots up normally without any keypress.

Running grub-install did not fix the error:

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub_uefi --recheck

Any ideas?

Cheers

Re: GRUB: error: no symbol table

I get a very similar problem but I am on a GPT table. Just did a new arch install yesterday so I suppose it is a bug in a recent grub update.

Re: GRUB: error: no symbol table

@robt77

The instructions you have given are for a MBR setup which the OP doesn't have.
They are using UEFI which means that the command they used was correct.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: GRUB: error: no symbol table

In my case I am using a GPT based drive (ssd), wiki guide is not that clear on gpt instructions. I simply created required partition and filesystem and installed grub to it (maybe wrongly)

Also suffering from this one on baremetal, MBR.
Any fixes found yet? It doesn't look like a bug is opened on the tracker yet, is there one?
