Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

So I'm back at this now after a week of holiday travels.
I tried adding the Screen part to ropids config, but I still get only one monitor to show the desktop, other one is black and cursor cant move over to it.

Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

Did you also run

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource GTX670 GTX1070
xrandr --auto

If yes, what's the output of

xrandr --listproviders

But as mentioned before: I doubt this will work. The cards won't have input capabilities...

No, I honestly forgot, but now I tried it again and nothing happens when I run the --setprovideroutputsource, only get reply "Could not find provider with name GTX670".

xrandr --listproviders  output:

Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x1b9 cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 4 outputs: 7 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-0

There should definitely be two here... lspci lists both GPUs:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] (rev a1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 670] (rev a1)

Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

Definitely don't use an xorg.conf file or nvidia-settings, it's deprecated. Xorg does a good job automatically detecting settings now. nvidia-settings will only break things, so I'd remove your xorg.conf file.

Anyways, try:

/usr/share/X11/30-screens.conf

Section "Module"
    Load	              "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

EndSection

Section "Monitor"

    VendorName      "Qnix"
    ModelName        "modelname"
    Option                "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"

I think this would be the simplest settings that could work, otherwise, you might have to add some more options to get the devices or monitors recognized.

Set up DKMS:
(install dkms)
Add

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

kernel parameter to your bootloader, and add

nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm and nvidia_drm

to your modules. Add

!/bin/sh
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

to your .xinitrc, or DM if you're using one.

And just a tip, I recommend adding the hook described in the wiki, as you might not notice the driver getting updated if you're upgrading a lot of packages in the future:

[Trigger]
Operation=Install
Operation=Upgrade
Operation=Remove
Type=Package
Target=nvidia

[Action]
Depends=mkinitcpio
When=PostTransaction
Exec=/usr/bin/mkinitcpio -P

Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

He does explicitly not want a zaphod setup, but a xinerama setup combining both GPUs, but without using xinerama (because that kills xrandr which apparently is a hard dependency of XFCE)
I don't think this is gonna work, though.

I'm frankly not sure about your attempt to set "modesetting" as provider xid (notably as nvidia is the assigned driver for both GPUs), but that's no legal shebang for sure and will raise an error.

Edit: apparently you noticed that as well ;-)

Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

Isn't it required to put that line in if you're using DKMS with nvidia?

The nvidia-dkms package behaves exactly as if you'd have used the normal nvidia package (or the version made for your particular kernel).

Re: Nvidia + Xorg with two GPUs

I get that, b/c I use nvidia-dkms when I switched to linux-zen. But I'm talking enabling the actual modesetting. Nouveau drivers have them enabled by default, nvidia doesn't.

luceph wrote:

Definitely don't use an xorg.conf file or nvidia-settings, it's deprecated. Xorg does a good job automatically detecting settings now. nvidia-settings will only break things, so I'd remove your xorg.conf file.

Anyways, try:

/usr/share/X11/30-screens.conf

Section "Module"
    Load	              "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

So I tried this, without the recommended hook, and I don't get an extended desktop, only one screen is active.
