pdflatex bug(?): crashes with the last version of poppler

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to ArchLinux and I just encountered a problem using pdflatex. I am not sure how to help (and be helped), so I make this post; if you find it irrelevant or under a wrong thread, plese let me know.

I use pdflatex along with the package epstopdf for converting eps images to pdf ones. Since yesterday, I get the following error:

Internal Error (0): Call to Object where the object was type 5, not the expected type 8

while in the "Log and Messages" window it states that

[PDFLaTeX] crashed
[PDFLaTeX] finished abruptly

By searching using the above error, I found out that this might be a problem because of ArchLinux. Take a look at this. In this discussion some suggest that downgrading poppler and texlive-bin would solve the problem.

Indeed, I tried to downgrade poppler, poppler-glib, poppler-gt5, and texlive-bin and the problem solved. However, after that, I could not even start Inkscape, which depends on the last version of poppler and I systematically use along with LaTeX. So this solution does not seem to be the best one.

I also copy the last post in the discussion:

I can confirm this problem on ArchLinux. I was able to fix this by keeping the new poppler package but install texlive directly from the official website rather than the Arch repo. So it is highly likely that this is an ArchLinux problem.

That might be a good solution, since there is no package downgrade (and thus Inkscape and possibly many other packages will not brake), but I have some questions:
a) I'm not sure how to install texlive directly from the official website (could you help me on this?), and
b) more importantly, could I do something to let the community know that this is a bug (if it really is)? How should I proceed? Should I just wait for a bug fix from the Arch community?

I'm a newbie, so please don't be brutal!
Thank you!

I'm known for being brutal, but don't worry, your post is useful and well constructed.

A) Note that the wiki page describes both methods of installing and maintaining a latex system.  I prefer using the repo packages.  I know some others here prefer the manual install.  The only rule is that you can't mix and match.  So if you are using repo packages now, your best bet would be to wait for the fixed texlive packages to reach the repos (assuming it is a package bug).

B) You can file a bug report on the bug tracker, but first lets take a few steps to confirm it is a package bug and narrow down specifically where it is, and then ensure there isn't already an open bug on the tracker. (edit: see above)

First, can you take out Kile out of the equation?  Do you get errors with just pdflatex?  If so, can you provide a minimum example of a tex file (or files) with which we can replicate the error?  Do you get the same error with xelatex or other -tex implementations? (edit: not particularly relevant now given progress on the bug tracker)

Thanks for this, I wasn't aware that there have been an open issue on bugs.archlinux.org.

You are right; it's not relevant to Kile (I'll edit the original post); the error can be reproduced via the command line using pdflatex, but I haven't tried other compilers (xelatex, etc). Should we wait for news from the bug tracker so as to flag it as "solved"?

If you have a sample file and instructions that can reproduce the issue with the versions noted above it might be worth contributing it to the bug report.

Yes, since after all it isn't (yet) solved! tongue (Also note that the texlive maintainer has not yet been able to reproduce the crash.)

Make sure to Watch the bugtracker ticket so you get notifications when it changes.

I just noticed it. I'll to create a sample and upload it.

Good to know, thank you smile

Re: pdflatex bug(?): crashes with the last version of poppler

It seems that the bug has been solved. As I've been told, the correct bug is FS#55721, not the one pointed above (FS#55720).

In any case, I have another question, which I think it's much better writing here rather than spamming the bug tracker. I copy from the bug tracker:

Comment by Rémy Oudompheng (remyoudompheng) - Tuesday, 26 September 2017, 00:09 GMT+3
Thanks for the report. The patch for poppler 0.59 compatibility contained a logic bug, triggering the issue.
The package texlive-bin 2017.44590-4 fixes it.

Could you please help me get this patch? Updating pacmac gives me the previous "texlive-bin-2017.44590-3". How shall I install "texlive-bin 2017.44590-4"? Is this a pacman.conf issue?

Thank you!

Either wait for your system's current mirror to update which should then contain texlive-bin 2017.44590-4 or switch mirror.

Re: pdflatex bug(?): crashes with the last version of poppler

If you want to test it immediately click the link on the front page for the arch next to the package texlive-bin 2017.44590-4 then download from mirror.
If you you want the signature then download that from any mirror such as https://mirror.f4st.host/archlinux/extra/os/ under the correct arch same name as the package but with .sig as an extra extension.
Then install with pacman -U (if you are using the signature make sure both files are in the same directory)

I downloaded it yesterday and installed via pacman -U, but today it's already on the repos (so regular upgrade also did the job in my other Arch machines).
Thank you all for your help and guidance.
