DEs/WMs wont load certain features/repeatedly crash no warn no reason

Earlier today i was working on a sketch in an xfce session when my screen abruptly just went black + the mouse cursor. Since then, no gui shell (with the exception of awesome -- awesome! -- and openbox, and against my expectations, gnome) I had installed at the time will load correctly, although it's unpredictable. xfce worked for a minute when I deleted .cache/sessions and .config/xfce4 and removed compiz --replace and emerald --replace from .xprofile. I added a panel and started setting it up like the old one was. As soon as I hit close on the config window, the panel flickered for a bit while it crashed, tried to reload, crashed again, repeat. Then the screen went black again, I assume because the plugin to load the icons and wallpaper had crashed as well. Cursor still moved around, but that was it. It was the same with kde--even after a force reinstall--When I start kde plasma I'll see the splash, then my autostart programs, it'll hang for a lil bit, and then my hotkeys work and I can press Alt+F2 for the run applet and such but thats it. drawn interfaces artifact--if I move a window, it leaves traces, the run applet will appear to still be open when it's not, etc. It's the same under kde/openbox, and this is regardless of if started from a display manager or not. I installed MATE and Cinnamon to see what happened and cause I'd been wanting to check them out anyway, and surprisingly, they work as intended (as of this writing). It's only guis I had installed before the crash that are affected, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. (Xfce affected but not Gnome?) I wasn't installing any software when the crash happened, I was just doodling in Krita. VLC was playing a video and Firefox was open but I'm pretty sure that was it. After I fiddled with XFCE and realized I wasn't going to get it by the end of the night, I performed a system upgrade with pacaur -Syu and noticed Xorg had an update. Neat. Still no dice after the update, though.

Can anybody help me out? I've been an avid arch user for years, and although I'd been away for a year, having one laptop that I traveled with and just never got around to installing linux on, I feel pretty comfortable and familiar with linux troubleshooting and configuration, and still, I've never seen anything like this, especially not from arch.
