Shift alt F12 did nothing. gonna check the logs though. (Edit: they didn't seem useful it hung itself completely once e.g. log cut of and the other time I couldn't see anything different)
Are you sure it's shift alt F12?

I can turn of optimus in the bios and run on the discreete only, how would I make that work as well without breaking it in the other configuration?
As it is now Xorg would load the Intel drivers not the nvidia one.



SOLUTION:
  This is a bit embarrasing but sharing is caring.
  Turns out it was a backlight issue all along.
  The black screen after KDE started was because the brightness was set to 0%.
  The backlight control currently knows only two setting for me (either completely black or blindingly bright)
  but that probably nothing to do with Bumblebee or Xorg.
So solved. fn+F8 (brightness up) was all it took
