You can marked the thread as solved by editing your first post and prepending [SOLVED] to the title.
Installation_guide#Connect_to_the_Internet as you have a wireless connection the dhcpcd connection attempt would fail
not sure if stopping the dhcpcd service would set the interface down so netctl could set it up.

Thanks, updated.

I'm getting a handle on it more now. The docs are nice a concise, but I'm finding it hard to see the bigger picture without it being a rabbit hole of reading many many things (not being sure if I'm even on the right track)). Next step is NVIDIA Drivers and Bumblebee!
