I had the same problem. Disabling New mail indicator extension solved the problem, system is fast and smooth.

Yeah, confirmed - today's mutter update fixed this for me.
Actually, to nitpick and be clear, it is the gnome-shell update which fixes this bug. Not the mutter update.
