I had the same problem. Disabling New mail indicator extension solved the problem, system is fast and smooth.

gnome-shell and mutter 3.32.2 are finally out and the problem is gone. I'm marking this as solved.

Actually, to nitpick and be clear, it is the gnome-shell update which fixes this bug. Not the mutter update.
