Er...guys...if I (finally) make the patches to the gensplash pkg then gensplash will work without kernel patches too...all a bit much of a muchness, n'est pa?
Is it possible to use gensplash without a patched kernel yet? If not, what are the patches you're speaking about?

heh, I figured someone might comment on that. Yeah I've just been reading mostly. I prefer talking on IRC over forums.

any chance of seeing usplash/splashy package and scripts in the AUR? Although im using gensplash atm i really dislike it (i cant really point why... maybe its because i cant press F2 until initramfs finishes loading...) and i think the other alternatives are better imo (specially the usplash which allows you to see the nice logo with the boot messages).
Thanks.

I agree. Personally, I've never liked gensplash. It may be some sort of subconcious thing with the gentoo branding, not sure. Anything that _is_ cross distro, and branded for a given distro irritates the crap out of me.
Anyway, splashy seems overly complex, and i actually don't like directfb. Mayhaps I'll go back to trying usplash.... /shrug
directfb is now only a makedepend splashy only needs glibc for the run

which is very nice. Splashy and Usplash are too featured (and with many dependencies).

kidding me? Usplash is dead simple and has bugger all features and dependencies.
Makedepends only glibc and gd, no actual depends other than mkinitcpio and initscripts-usplash.
Features, all it does is a splash, text and a progress bar. I think you can put icons on it too, but that takes a little bit more work.
I was working on my usplash setup last night. It's 'working'. Displays text and progress, through initcpio to X. Not as well as i'd like though, and I havn't got around to making an arch theme. Using the hideous testcard.png still. I'll put it up in the next few days, maybe for christmas.

Great! Please do, I would be willing to help perfect it.

Would my knowledge of getting gensplash to work help? I am keen to see usplash working too.

No, I was serious.
Sorry if I misinterpreted something, but AFAIK it uses BOGL+BOWL+BOML libraries (graphics, GUI and mouse stuff). I saw (K)Ubuntu's boot screen - it's way too much featured.
Maybe it's possible to use only basic part of all this - I don't know.

Heh thats cool, but I am not a fan of Splash screens at bootups, slows it down more than it really needs to be, I am happy with my 10sec boot into X, works for me. A splash interface is only good to look at if you're waiting 5mins for a bootup, like Windows .

Yes usplash includes a customised bogl version. Every splash system requires a dependency to draw on the screen - otherwise it can't. Bogl is tiny and simple, so is naturally a good choice.
BOGL stands for Ben's Own Graphics Library. It is a tiny graphics library for kernel 2.2.x framebuffers. It supports only very simple graphics.

I've been working with usplash-0.3e. It's an older version than the latest, so i'm not sure what the latest adds.
It supports splash background, progress bar, and status text, which is a pretty simple feature set.
It may be able to do icons and things as well, but in any splash system that's actually next to no extra effort to support.
Looks are deceiving, usplash is lightweight, fairly simple and imho, the best splash setup out there.

Guess what... I've finally been able to make Splashy work (well, partially). Since I want Splashy to start very early, I wanted it in an initramfs image. And since I didn't really know how mkinitcpio/mkinitramfs works, I had a hard time... (Thank to this I learned a lot about the booting process and how mkinitcpio works )
Well this is what I've accomplished:
1. Initial ports of the splashy hooks from initramfs to initcpio (still needs a lot of checking)
files:
/lib/initcpio/hooks/splashy
/lib/initcpio/install/splashy
2. (partially) ported the init script of Splashy to Arch. Partially because I still need to port the calculate_steps function (makes the progress bar progress/move/whatever)
file:
/etc/rc.d/splashy
Current state:
1. On boot up, the bootsplash initiates via the splashy hook (although the progress bar still doesn't move (see #2 above)) and terminates via the init script.
2. On shutdown, the bootsplash initiates via the init script. Although in my case, the bootsplash appears only momentarily.
Known problems/shortcomings:
1. Progress bar doesn't move.
2. When shutting down, the bootsplash appears only momentarily.
3. init script/hook may have a lot of bugs in them.
Please let me know your opinions/suggestions/thoughts/comments on this. Thanks.
It's already 2:46 AM and I'm off to bed now.

Please see the note.
@iphitus: you may want to look at the package, and if you want to, you can adopt the package yourself.
