[Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

Hi everyone,

After today update 6.04 -> 6.06, virtual win7 crash (blue screen of death) because of "wrong ACPI"
This bug is repetitive. No alternative actually better than to downgrade to 6.04.
Any suggestions?

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

Hello all,

I'm having the same issue this morning after the upgrade to 6.0.6.  I've been running this VM on this same machine for months with no issues and no configuration changes.  Reverting the packages to 6.0.4 works as a temporary fix.

The BSOD says "The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.  Please contact your system vendor for an updated BIOS."  It has a STOP code of 0x000000A5.

I've tried booting normally, and into Startup Repair.  Normal boot makes the BSOD appear and disappear rather quickly, and Startup Repair keeps the BSOD on the screen long enough to get a screenshot.  In addition, I get the same BSOD when I try to boot with a Windows 7 ISO.

If it matters, I'm using the virtualbox, virtualbox-guest-iso, virtualbox-host-dkms packages from the community repo, along with virtualbox-ext-oracle from the AUR.  All of the other packages on my system are up to date as of 07:30 AM EDT.

If anyone has any suggestions, they'd certainly be appreciated!  Otherwise I'll keep a lookout for any guidance from upstream.

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

Hi everyone,
Since yesterday, the virtualbox packages I use (virtualbox, virtualbox-guest-iso, virtualbox-host-dkms from the community repo) have been updated (6.0.6-1 -> 6.0.6-4) however, the issue remains and Win7 (x64) guest crash repetitively.
Be waiting on downgraded install (6.0.4-4)...

Yes, it has been reported here (not by me).

FYI I tried to install windows 7 64 bits and it is not possible. I have another VM running in the same Virtualbox with no issues.

@ Koven, there's a workaround/solution offered here

@WFV, acpica is not even installed in my case! If I understand well, it's used to build virtualbox packages.
So should we wait for new virtualbox packages builds to be published in community repo (Christian Hesse <Christi@n-Hes.se>)?

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

I apologize feNNec, should have said "possible workaround" as at least one Arch user in that forum was able to upgrade direct from Oracle and another found possible problem with 6.06 Arch VirtualBox. Anyone try 6.06 on Kernel 5.08?
With 6.04 none of my guests launch in k5.08 on this machine as the modules won't load (XP and other linux guests as well as W7). I'll try it later tonight.

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

If acpica-20190215-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz is not in the package cache (/var/cache/pacman/pkg)

# pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/a/acpica/acpica-20190215-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz #there is no need to actually install the package after pacman has downloaded it

Install devtools,  git and base-devel then rebuild virtualbox locally

$ git clone git://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git --single-branch --branch "packages/virtualbox"
$ cd community/trunk
$ multilib-build -- -I /var/cache/pacman/pkg/acpica-20190215-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Then install generated packages.

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

@ loqs, will that work with acpica-20190329-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz or does it require the previous version? (both are in .../cache here)
Thanks.

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

@WFV I would expect 20190329-1 to produce a package with the issue see [1] 20190215-1 is the version that yan12125 produced a working package from.

Re: [Solved] Virtualbox update to 6.06: win7 guest crash

@ loqs, that works! THANKS! never used that method before, pretty impressive, max'd out all 8 cores of this old FX8350 (c.2013) for some 10+ minutes solid, Zalman CNPS9900 held temp ~58C, then dropped >10C within a couple seconds when returned to 1 core for compressing packages smile have only repackaged a few via makepkg and modifying or patching PKGBUILD...
Also did virtualbox-host-modules-arch as I use it not dkms, and not sure if necessary but went ahead and built guest-iso and also ext-oracle (from AUR) against acpica-20190215 as I use both of them. Everything up-to-date now big_smile

virtualbox 6.0.6-2 in the repositories should address the issue.
